Quotes from today’s guests.?

“You need to do some planning beforehand… Sign up for different talks because they will stop you from going in after a certain point if you're not on the list or if you line up too late for the talk.” - Adrian Sanabria

“I always plan on spending some time on the floor. And I love to go to the edge of the floor and hit the little tiny booths for the brand new baby startups. - Allan Alford

“There's a million and one activities outside of and around RSA that I participate in as well. And balancing the actual conference with the extra conference activities ends up being one of the goals every year for me.” - Allan Alford

“Don't schedule every hour of your RSA… Leave some time for those spontaneous meetings to happen.” - Adrian Sanabria

“RSA is huge. You know, if you think you're going to get from a meeting at a booth in South Expo to a talk in West Muscone in five minutes on the third floor of West Muscone, not going to happen. You can't do back-to-back meetings.” - Adrian Sanabria

“I book 30 minute intervals in between everything I plan to do. Even if it turns out to only be the five minute walk. Even if it is just going from a booth here to a booth there in the same floor I still book a 30 minute interval.” - Allan Alford

“Some portion of [my relationships in cyber] is tied back to those random bump-ins at RSA.” - Allan Alford

Quotes from our audience

“Talk with people about something outside your own field of expertise. The research on innovation is very clear: most 'great' innovations come from the 'weak portion of your network' meaning it's not someone who does exactly what you do.” - Dutch Schwartz , global head, security, strategic industries, Amazon Web Services (AWS)

“Honesty is key. If you don't have the budget, staff, or time to implement, let them know. Most vendors will follow up six months out, or even a year to see if things have changed.” - William Tulaba, CISSP , manager, security engineering, Cognex Corporation

“What I always say with vendors is that I want to get us to a reasonably quick ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ but I really try to avoid the ambiguous ‘maybe.’?That is frustrating for everyone." - Duane Gran , corporate director of information security, Converge Technology Solutions Corp.

“Here are possible goals: 1/ learn about a specific tech to solve a problem, 2/ make new connections, 3/ nurture existing connections, 4/ get a group together who is normally physically disparate, 5/ be inspired, 6/ learn a skill.” - Dutch Schwartz, global head, security, strategic industries, AWS

“Big ones are better for broader reach and meeting more people, smaller ones are better for building stronger, closer relationships and if you get overwhelmed at the larger events.” - Samantha Estrella , director, podcast operations, Security Weekly Productions

“Help others move up. You make introductions to people. Somebody who is junior on your team, you bring them along and you introduce them to people so that they can build up their networks over time.”? - Fernando Montenegro , senior principal analyst, Omdia

Thanks for posting the recording. I wasn't able to attend live. Great show! As an East Coaster, I don't get out West very often. I am looking forward to my first RSA attendance and will follow some of the good advice I heard here.

DANG this little earpiece mic was hot. Figuring out how in Windows 11 to turn that son of a gun down some. Per David's comment I'm on crutches, working out of my dining room and all my real mics are out of reach. Apologies for the crappy sound, folks.
