Florida has many fantastic retirement locations. In my opinion, one of the best places to retire overall would have to be in Greater Tampa Bay. The third largest city in the state of Florida, with over 4 million people, there is plenty to do in this area. Whether you want to live coastal, inland, or seeking exclusivity, Tampa Bay really has it all.

With great weather year round, the lifestyle, the aesthetics, and the overall feel of Tampa Bay, it is an area that you would want to live in and retire in. Whether you are wanting to have a relaxing day at the many beaches Tampa Bay has to offer, going to a Tampa Bay Rays game, or enjoying world renowned museums, four of the best cities to retire in Tampa Bay would have all that and more.

  • County: Pinellas County
  • Population: 36,068
  • Sports: Toronto Blue Jays spring training, Dunedin Blue Jays
  • Beaches: Dunedin Causeway, Honeymoon Island, Caladesi Island State Park

Dunedin is located in a very interesting spot. It is on the west side of the Tampa Bay area, and slightly at the most northern tip of the barrier islands, it has the perks of a small town with a traditional, old Florida way of living. You are looking at a 7 mile one way drive to Clearwater Beach, a 23 mile one way drive to downtown St. Petersburg, and the same to downtown Tampa.

This proximity opens you up to a great art scene, such as with the Dali Museum, the Chihuly Gallery, or famous sports teams like the Tampa Bay Rays, Tampa Bay Lightning, or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. You have entertainment with the Florida Aquarium or Busch Gardens, fantastic restaurants, or great shopping. This city has a big brewery scene, which shows with how many breweries Dunedin has. Dunedin also offers many nature trails, bike riding options, walkable, and just being nature centric.

With an average sale price of $454,676, there are many options for you to look at. With many neighborhoods to look at, townhouses, condominiums, villas, or a single family residence, you can't really beat the location or the way of life in this small city.

2. Wesley Chapel | Classic

  • County: Pasco County
  • Population: 64,866
  • Suburb: North and inland of Tampa
  • Affordability: Great

Wesley Chapel is basically the complete opposite of Dunedin. A full suburb located 35-40 minutes from the downtown Tampa area, and 45-50 minutes from the gulf beaches. This is an inland city, possibly very advantageous to the other suburbs Tampa has to offer. It is going to feel newer, better, and more stuff to do in comparison to the others.

For a retiree, this community is wonderful, despite the long distances from the major cities and the many beaches. It is a sacrifice that has to be made, however the prices are much better. Wesley Chapel still offers a lot for you to do in retirement.

With many neighborhoods, lots of restaurants, the Wiregrass Mall, clean, open air, close proximity to roads leading you all around the state, commercial spaces, and even a fresh water lagoon for the public, you don't need to travel to Tampa or these bigger cities to do what you need or want to do, you have the options close to you.

Wesley Chapel is a traditional suburb, having a lot of single family residences. With an average price of $505,286, these homes are a lot newer and cheaper than options you would have in a bigger downtown area like Tampa, while having the options available to you.

  • Location: Close to St. Pete, Sarasota, Bradenton, Tampa
  • Beaches: St. Pete Beach, Pass-a-Grille Beach, Fort DeSoto Beach

What's great about Tierra Verde is how close it is to so many gulf coast beaches and cities. You are 10 miles away from downtown St. Pete and all the beaches St. Pete offers, 23 miles from Bradenton Florida, 33 miles away from Anna Maria Island, the northern most tip of Sarasota/Bradenton beaches.

This is an area where you can quickly access some of the best places Florida has to offer, in the Tampa and Sarasota regions, being able to reach these destinations with a short drive, you wont be able to beat that in any other location in Florida.

This community is your traditional residential boating community. People here love the water and doing all the activities the gulf coast offers like fishing, boating, beachy restaurants, and more. It is your stereotypical Florida retirement.

Tierra Verde has a higher price point compared to our previous locations. Coming in at an average price of $766,438, you'll definitely be enjoying the lifestyle this area offers.
