Best New Creatives — 2023 Graduate Showcase — Part 2 of 2
Ian Wharton
Founder and CEO of Aide Health ? Advisor at Justified Studio ? Governor at Arts University Bournemouth
This graduating year has felt the full force of the pandemic. Two years of disruption and a third of recovery will have led to a very unique experience of university life.
The impact isn't visible in the work, and there is by no means less effort, but the context is important. There is more urgency from this group to find progressive, collaborative creative environments than in previous years. And definitely more interest in smaller, independent studios than network agencies.
These articles are now in their fifth year. Like every year, the selection is scouted. It requires conversations with dozens of lecturers, reviewing every online graduate showcase, visiting some in person, and of course, attending D&AD New Blood. The process takes roughly a month, and still, there are definitely people I miss.
Selection is based on the total body of work —?a minimum of three pieces. This is to showcase consistency, breadth of creative skill and curiosity and to highlight any entrepreneurial spirit. For whatever reason, finding proficiency (or interest) in digital products and services this year was much harder.
In two parts, rather than four as in other years to maximise exposure for all featured, here are 20 outstanding creative graduates from Bachelor of Arts courses across the UK.
11. Joanna Nicoll
Graduate of Loughborough University : "Hello, I’m a multi-disciplinary designer who has recently graduated. I love concept-driven design and storytelling through the lens of a brand with a unique personality."
Ambition: "I’d like to develop my skills in a brand design or advertising agency, bringing fresh ideas and new perspectives that will make an impact."
Hopes for the industry: "My hope is that the creative industry is leading in how it embraces and adapts to the changing landscape of technology, whilst retaining the power of real human connection, and how this sets us apart."
12. Eoin Quinn O'Kramer
Graduate of Norwich University of Arts : "I’m a designer who loves challenging myself to learn something new with every brief I take on — whether that be motion design, illustration or 3D design — there’s always something new and exciting that I’m eager to tackle. I believe that my work combines the aesthetic-led design approach that I learned from growing up in Switzerland, with the idea-driven design I learned at Norwich University of the Arts."
Ambition: "I hope to work with inspiring designers that push me to be better while continuing to learn through self-initiated projects outside of work."
Hopes for the industry: "I hope that the creative industries will continue to put human creativity and craft at the forefront, in the wake of Artificial Intelligence. I worry that overreliance on AI tools could get rid of what I enjoy most about the creative process."
13. Tyler McFaul
Graduate of Leeds Arts University : "I am a graphic designer with a strong passion for type, web and publication design. I use design to explore experimental concepts, have fun, and hopefully, along the way, communicate powerful messages to diverse audiences. I was recently lucky enough to be chosen for this year's?D&AD's New Blood: The Portfolios."
Ambition: "I'm currently on the search for a full-time junior position, staying close to my roots in Yorkshire. My goal is to find a challenging and rewarding position within publishing, web design or branding."
Hopes for the industry: "Being a queer designer, being able to use design to educate and inspire change is very important to me. I hope that the industry continues to provide queer designers with a safe platform as well as opportunities to let our voices be heard so that we can work towards a brighter future built upon respect and creativity."
14. Josh Langley
Graduate of the University of Portsmouth : "As a recent graphic design graduate, I have been embracing a deep-rooted aspiration to become a graphic designer. Ever since I was young, this dream has fuelled my journey. With a natural curiosity and love for learning, I aim to create designs that inspire and captivate others. My main areas of focus are in brand and visual identity design, as well as typography."
Ambition: "To be in an environment where I feel inspired on a day-to-day basis. I aim to be in an agency where great ideas are born through creative challenges and meaningful connections with like-minded individuals."
Hopes for the industry: "To continue bringing people together by shedding light on unrealised potential - whether it's for our clients or fellow designers within the industry."
15. Ewan Booth
Graduate of Edinburgh College of Art : "I am a graduate graphic designer specialising in motion-led identity and print design. I particularly enjoy creating more locally orientated work which has a positive impact."
Ambition: "I hope to?secure a full-time position within a design agency where I will learn from other designers and develop my skills while creating work for the real world."
Hopes for the industry: "I hope the industry will continue to welcome new technologies and methods of working to keep progressing what design can do."

16. Nilesh Arun Kawale
Graduate of the University of Central Lancashire : "I'm Nilesh, a versatile designer with a passion for Motion Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Development. With a background in fine arts, I bring a unique perspective to my creative work. Also, I'm the winner of this year's New Blood Portfolio Competition."
Ambition: "I want to work in the field of design for good."
Hopes for the industry: "I am interested in working for a B Corp-certified company."
17. Lucy Lillywhite
Graduate of Falmouth University : "Coming from a fine art background, I like to combine aspects of handcraft and digital in my work, to create projects that are thoughtful, intricate and have layers of meaning and insight. My main interests lie in brand and campaign work, but also in experimental social design projects."
Ambition: "In the short term, I would like to dive straight into industry work and gain experience working with a variety of clients and people. I’m lucky enough to be working two placements this summer, and I’m hoping the skills I learn from these will help me land a junior position later in the year."
Hopes for the industry: "I hope the design industry continues to be a factor in positive change towards a globally sustainable future. I’d like to see, and make, work that challenges modern consumerism and potentially makes an impact on future design ideals."
18. Robert Pearce
Graduate of Arts University Bournemouth : "I am currently based along the south coast, having just graduated from Arts University Bournemouth with a First Class Honours Degree. I am proficient with both physical and digital mediums, with a particular focus on brand and identity creation, as well as user-centred design."
Ambition: "Having just graduated, I will look to take my first steps into industry to gain valuable experience and insights, and continue growing as a young designer."
Hopes for the industry: "To land a role as a junior designer, working across a range of brand, identity and user-centred projects, continuing to build on my portfolio and to become a core part of this growing industry."
19. Bexley Baker
Graduate of Arts University Bournemouth : "Being situated at the centrefold of illustration and design, I find myself driven by a passion for visual storytelling and a curiosity about the interplay that exists between these two disciplines. With every project, my aim is to create work that not only embraces the playful and unconventional but also holds a personal sentiment beneath its exterior."
Ambition: "I hope to find myself burrowed within a?forward-thinking studio or collective that places creativity above corporate agendas. Surrounded by talented individuals, I seek a collaborative environment that sparks inspiration, fosters personal growth and encourages me to push the boundaries of my own creative practice."
Hopes for the industry: "That it continues uplifting the voices of underrepresented creatives - acknowledging both the power and beauty that can derive from risk-taking and culminating spaces from which new and unique narratives can flourish."
20. Sammy Rudkin
Graduate of Loughborough University : "I am a multi-disciplinary graphic designer with a specialism in branding, motion & 3D, and a recent graduate of Loughborough University."
Ambition: "My main short-term ambition currently is to make the most of my entry into the industry - meet as many new faces as I can, and in the process, accelerate both experiential and practical learning in the field."
Hopes for the industry: "I hope the industry continues to head in a direction that embraces fun and uniqueness over ideas that are regurgitated for security, supporting ideas that may be a bit risky."
