A question with an ever-intensifying spotlight is what the future of creative education looks like. Knowing the cost, knowing how we have mostly settled into the rituals of virtual learning and collaboration, university courses are a far less obvious route than when I was a student. Still, we should advocate their value. The best of them are deeply integrated with the industry, evaluate and advance their curriculums each year, and remain one of the few environments that allow broad creative discovery with the necessary miscalculations along the way. Most importantly, they still help develop outstanding talent.
Picking up from 2019 and 2020 after a regrettable gap due to covid, these four articles are a selection of 20 graduates who, in my view, are among the most talented to come from UK institutions this year. This is a scouted process with selections made from total current portfolio, rather than a singular piece of work. This is done to showcase breadth of talent and capability to potential employers.
There is work in here via individual enterprise that challenges, and in some cases exceeds, the standards of veteran teams in 20-year established creative firms. I hope you’re as excited by these people as I am.
06. Abraham Egbobawaye
Graduate of University of the Arts London. "Ciao????, I'm Abraham, an aspiring motion designer based in the UK, with an interest in graphically-driven 2D design, and a little bit of 3D. I challenge myself to understand complex things and translate them in simple and meaningful ways, with the hope of making things clearer, more vibrant and inject a little bit of fun whenever I can."
Ambition: "I'd really like to start working alongside professional creatives on interesting projects within a *physical* studio environment, in the hope of further developing my creative and technical skills, and really push myself to be more uncomfortable, fail and iterate more than I usually allow myself to. (Hopefully having some fun along the way ??)"
Hopes for the industry: "I'd actually love seeing more diversity in creative teams instead of just hearing about promises of it, where their cultures and abilities of all levels are genuinely valued. It'd also be wonderful if pros in the industry were more transparent about the early stages of their process when sharing work online (e.g. behind-the-scenes, mistakes etc.), and really celebrated experimentation that might not fit into our expectations of "polished work"."

07. Sabina Vasileva
Graduate of Arts University Bournemouth. "I consider myself to be a digitally-led Graphic Designer with a passion for product branding, label packaging and 3D design, and motion graphics. I am always on the lookout to improve the quality of my work."
Ambition: "My next steps will be to integrate myself into the industry in order to find a fantastic team of designers who will assist me in becoming truly brilliant at what I enjoy doing the most."
Hopes for the industry: "Creativity is a bridge built between two unrelated concepts to produce a new world that did not exist before. "

08. Saskia Nicholls
Graduate of Arts University Bournemouth. "I am constantly looking to learn new things through my practice. I take joy working across illustration and graphic design, I’m drawn to colour, humour and focusing on the details."
Ambition: "I’m feeling optimistic for life after university. I am excited to learn more in the industry, and meeting and working with amazing creatives every day. I want to grow and continue to push myself out of my comfort zone not just when it comes to design but in all aspects of my life. I really am just getting started."
Hopes for the industry: "I just hope it continues to grow and flourish, when it comes to design I think there is so much still to discover and I can’t wait to be a part of it."

09. Lucy Howett
Graduate of Norwich University of the Arts. "I specialise in branding and packaging and have a passion for illustration too! I love to create fun and innovative designs with the eventual aim to bring more sustainable methods to the industry."
Ambition: "To gain experience within the creative industry is my main goal now but I hope to eventually work at a London-based agency, somewhere that challenges my thinking as well as encourages creative freedom. I’m excited to see what sort of work I’ll produce and would love to produce a piece of design that people look at and think... why didn't I think of that!"
Hopes for the industry: "What design means to me is being inspired from the world around you! As designers, we can have a lot of power to create societal change within the industry. I hope the creative industry focuses more on tackling important issues such as bettering our planet and making sustainable packaging the norm."

10. Matt Webb
Graduate of the University of Hertfordshire. "I’ve just graduated from the University of Hertfordshire and won a graphite D&AD New Blood Pencil. I have a major passion for motion design."
Ambition: "I want to get a job in a respected design agency. Hopefully, one day even open my own agency. I really want to push motion design, and get it a major front runner in trends for the industry. Creating awesome design that moves."
Hopes for the industry: "My hopes for industry are that motion design becomes more prominent as it’s a super important area of design to me."
