Just type ‘best marketing advice’ into Google and you’ll quickly come across thousands of different people with thousands of different opinions.
However, if you counted all these ‘tips and tricks’ up, it would be much harder to find those worth any value. Often, people give their opinions without actually having experience in the industry and this is something I struggled with when first getting started. After listening to hundreds of different people, I decided I would have to trust my instincts and forget the advice of others.
Despite this, there was one person whose advice I trusted until the very end and that was my mentor. As someone who had extensive experience in the marketing world, offline mostly but a little online too, he gave advice very rarely and this is how I knew I could trust every word. For the most part, he listened and gave me tips on how to overcome a problem. Then, one day, after watching me try to target the world and become the very best in social media marketing, he stopped me in my tracks and said one thing;
“You don’t have to be the best in the world; you just have to be the best in this area”
For many years, I’d told myself I needed to be the best on the planet when it was only a 15-mile radius (maximum) that actually mattered.
As local business owners, I hope you can relate to this because you shouldn’t care what happens 10,000, 500, or even 50 miles away because that’s too far away to visit your business on a regular basis.
For most local businesses, you only need to worry about a 15-mile radius from your business and this could even be reduced to ten or five, depending on what business you’re in. As long as you’re the best marketer in this small area, you can win over the market in a much more effective way than every single one of your competitors.
What Does This Mean? – In theory, this sounds great but what does it mean in practice? Well, it means you only need the platforms applicable to your area whether this is Facebook and Instagram or perhaps just Facebook alone. If it helps, add some video marketing and consider a YouTube channel as a hub for all your content but you don’t need to be active on platforms in which the locals have absolutely no interest.
If there’s a famous similar business on the other side of the world testing a brand-new marketing strategy, this is no concern of yours because all that matters is your own market; too often, we get caught up in selling to markets that aren’t our own. By dominating the social media presence in your own market, you can top the list for your category in your area for a long time to come.
Be Willing to Learn – As an added piece of advice for you, feel free to look at the competitors in your market who are doing it right. If there’s a competitor with plenty of history, always busy, and they’re active on Facebook, Instagram and others, be ready and willing to learn from what they do without copying.
If there’s nobody in your market in this position, all you have to do is take a step forward this year and it could be you. This is some of the best marketing advice you will ever receive.
