There’s a concept called planned serendipity. It means you may not know what opportunities are available, but you make every effort to ensure that those opportunities find you. Think of it as a way to increase your luck. When it comes to LinkedIn, planned serendipity means you want to make yourself as visible and available as possible so you can advance your career. That means you want people checking out your profile.
To maximize profile views, focus on two key areas:
- Increasing Connections
- Increasing Engagement
Before proceeding with these two actions, make sure your profile shines brilliantly. If you’re going to have people checking it out, you want to make sure it wows them. Here’s a quiz that will help you evaluate your LinkedIn profile and networking strategy. Pay close attention to questions 1-12.
Once you get your profile in tip-top shape, it’s time to get people to look at it.
INCREASING CONNECTIONS
The more connections you have, the more second-level connections you have. It's your first- and second-level connections who can see your complete profile. When you connect with people who have lots of connections, you dramatically increase your number of second-level connections – and receive more connection requests. You also get more views of your profile because of how you show up in search results.
Here are 3 ways to increase your connections:
1. Connect with the Connected
To rapidly grow your connections and ultimately the views of your profile, connect with people in your community who have lots of connections. You know the people who are the true connectors. Identify those people and proactively reach out to add them to your LinkedIn network. Feel free to connect with me!
2. Join the LIONs Club
No, not the Lion’s Club that supports local and global communities through volunteerism. LIONs at LinkedIn are LinkedIn Open Networkers. This is not a LinkedIn sanctioned program, but members of this LIONs club as the name suggests are open to connecting. They indicate they are LIONs by adding LION to end of their last name or adding it somewhere in their profile. You don’t have to be a LION to have a liberal connections strategy. I am not a LION, but I do accept most connection requests I get.
3. Take the Suggestion
LinkedIn suggests people with whom you should connect based on your mutual connections and the content in your profile. Browse those suggestions regularly (at least weekly) and connect with those people who meet your connections criteria.
INCREASING ENGAGEMENT
The more engaged you are in LinkedIn, the more people you come in contact with and the more people who want to learn more about you.
Here are two ways two amp up the engagement:
1. Join Groups
Groups can make you instantly visible to tens or hundreds of thousands of people. Being an active member of groups doesn’t mean you need to post new content every week – you don’t need to post it at all. All social actions – like commenting on and sharing content – will make you a more visible part of the community and get more people checking out your profile.
2. Post Content
The best way to attract attention to your ideas and opinions is by posting your own content. When you commit to publishing your knowledge with your unique point of view, you start to attract the attention of people who connect with your message. When you share your Blogs with your connections and LinkedIn groups, you maximize the impact. LinkedIn groups are the key because they comprise large numbers of people who are all interested in the same topic.
When you spend time and energy in creating a brilliant profile, strive to get it seen by as many people as you can. That will yield a positive return on your investment.
