#2 Are the best days of open-source-software movement behind?
This blog originates from the BC era (Before ChatGPT) yet has been retained in our series for its timeless topical relevance.
The open-source movement embarked on its journey in the late 90s, with the inception of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). This period was marked by the dominant reign of tech giants, notably Microsoft, alongside Intel, Cisco, and Dell - collectively referred to as the Four Horsemen. Interestingly, IBM, absent from this tech quartet, emerged as a key sponsor of ASF, perhaps to challenge the status quo.
The Genesis
The establishment of ASF marked the dawn of a new era, one that promised a collaborative approach to software development. This was closely followed by the formation of the Linux Foundation in 2000, another cornerstone in the open-source narrative. Together, they set the stage for an innovative decade that saw the open-source movement transition from infancy to maturity.
As the decade unfolded, a slew of successful projects found their genesis under the ASF umbrella. Parallelly, Linux morphed into a production-grade operating system, with RedHat leading the charge in commercializing it. The momentum gathered during this period underscored the potential of open-source, setting a robust foundation for the adventures that lay ahead.
The Glory Days
The onset of 2010 heralded a golden era for open-source software, especially within the burgeoning Big Data realm, where I had the opportunity to contribute. The decade witnessed an unspoken consensus among vendors, recognizing open-source as an indispensable part of their strategic playbook.
The landscape now featured a nuanced classification of open-source, extending into open-core, and open-API domains. While not universally embraced by open-source purists, this broadened definition encouraged a more inclusive participation from various enterprises. The Kafka API adherence by numerous messaging products serves as a testament to this inclusivity, hinting at a broader acceptance and adaptation of open-source principles.

The narrative of this era is rich with collaborations and innovations, underscoring the essence of open-source as a catalyst for community-driven, boundary-pushing endeavors.
The Crossroads
As we step into the current decade, the open-source movement finds itself at a crossroads, facing challenges that could potentially reshape its trajectory. The rise of the public cloud, a shift in community dynamics, and the evolution in innovation and value creation paradigms are emerging as significant influencers.
These factors could bear implications on the independence and the ethos of the open-source movement. The cloud, for instance, introduces a new model of service delivery that could overshadow traditional open-source models. Similarly, changing community dynamics could lead to a drift in focus and objectives.
This blog serves as a precursor to a deeper examination of these challenges in subsequent posts. It's an invitation to a discourse, to share insights, and to collectively navigate through the unfolding narrative of open-source. As we venture into these discussions, the core question remains - will the open-source movement continue its upward trajectory, or are we witnessing the onset of a decline?
In Conclusion
The open-source saga is a rich tapestry of collaborative endeavours, innovations, and a shared ethos of community-driven growth. As we stand at the precipice of new challenges, it's imperative to reflect, engage in meaningful dialogues, and envision a roadmap that ensures the sustenance and growth of the open-source ethos. Through subsequent explorations, we aim to delve deeper into these topics, fostering a shared understanding and hopefully, charting a path forward in the open-source odyssey.
