What makes a good subject line?

You want your subject line to grab your reader’s attention. But how do you actually go about doing that? Remember, these aren’t hard and fast rules—just things to keep in mind when trying to craft an effective subject line. Words like discover, learn, uncover, reveal, etc., Will it give them a chance to win something valuable? How many words should my subject line be?

The ideal length for a good subject line is six words. But remember: short doesn’t mean boring or ineffective! You could even consider testing different lengths to see what works best for your audience. If you want to keep someone reading, include information about why they should take note of your email; without context about what you’re sending them, there isn’t much reason for them to click through. Should I include links in my subject line?

Many cold email marketers have turned on links in their subject lines. Most of these marketers say it increases open rates. After trying it out with over 50 cold emails, I also found that there is a slight increase in open rates when including links in your subject line. What if someone sees my email address in the sender field?

The fact that your email address is visible in the from field of your message doesn’t mean that it will automatically disqualify your message from being opened. In fact, just about all of us have experienced emails from companies like Groupon or Amazon where we could easily see both their sender name and address, so there’s no reason why people would think twice about seeing one from a small business. Instead, simply add Best Regards, Sincerely, or Thank You! at the end of each email (in addition to including your contact information). HTML emails are easier for people to read, and look better on mobile devices. There are also some great tools out there that make it really simple to create your own email template (like HVTL). You’ll want to keep track of which subject lines work best so you can replicate them in future cold emails.

Is there anything else I should know before starting a cold email campaign?

There’s a LOT of best practices floating around out there. If not, stop what you’re doing immediately—you may hurt your reputation more than help it. Make sure your contact list is up-to-date. No one likes being bombarded with requests for information or sales pitches. Be patient; don’t expect results overnight!
