THE BEST CLIENT I EVER HAD PAID ME IN THE MOST UNEXPECTED WAY

THE BEST CLIENT I EVER HAD PAID ME IN THE MOST UNEXPECTED WAY

My business thrives on referrals and this one was no exception. This particular referral came from a former client, so the probability of conversion seemed relatively high. ?

I contacted the prospect with my standard exploratory call to understand their needs and share my process and was initially met with great enthusiasm. When the call progressed to the subject of cost, the conversation abruptly changed. Initial silence at the other end was followed by a heartfelt admission that they could not afford to engage my services. At that moment of vulnerability, their story unfolded. ????

This prospect was a single parent, had just lost their job, and was dealing with a recurrence of a serious health issue requiring ongoing treatment. With no severance package, looming COBRA payments, a mortgage due, and regular household bills, there was no room to stretch the budget. ?

They made no requests for discounts, nor was any expectation for charity expressed. This was a private health battle they fought once before, all the while showing up for work each day. A heavy load previously endured was rearing its ugly head again.

Their plight deeply resonated with me as one of my own family members had faced a similar health crisis a year prior. The tables now took a turn and I found myself tearfully offering to write the résumé free of charge. ????

Throughout the process, I continued to be inspired by their strength, positivity, intelligence, and forward-looking view. Despite ongoing medical treatments causing occasional schedule conflicts, their commitment to job search never wavered.

I would tread lightly with topics outside of our professional relationship and wait for cues to determine what was comfortable to discuss and what felt off-limits. As trust grew, we spoke more openly, developing a lovely rapport grounded in mutual respect. ?

When the project drew to a close, I shared the client’s struggles with my sister, a founding member of the Family Reach Foundation - a nonprofit providing grants to families facing health crises. She sprung into action, mobilized the troops, and sent funds to alleviate some of my client’s financial burdens. ??

My client has had a few interviews and continues the job search, but keeps one foot in front of the other, and the other and the other. They embody the spirit of facing challenges with an unwavering belief that tomorrow will be a better day. ?

On this Thanksgiving Eve, I reflect on the gratitude I have for what I’ve been given. I am profoundly grateful for my continued good health, loving family and friends, and the privilege of helping others. ?

Is it better to give than receive? I certainly received much more than I gave. Where there’s light, there’s hope!

Wishing all a Happy Thanksgiving, overflowing with gratitude and compassion. ?#gratitude#careers

Barbara, your story hits home with a powerful message: the impact of our work stretches well beyond the dollars and cents. Your empathy and compassion stand out as prime examples of the "pay it forward" philosophy in action. Keep shining your light.?

Thank you for the shout out to Family Reach and for sharing the harsh reality people with cancer face in this country. 1 out of 3 cancer patients can’t meet their basic needs.
