Whether your dog gets a full trim every 6-8 weeks or just needs touch ups around the feet, dog hair clippers are likely to come in handy at home. You might be tempted to grab the same trimmers used in your household for beards or personal grooming, but that’s not a great idea. “Dogs generally have more hair compared to the hair on our heads, so a human clipper is not designed to handle that,” veterinarian Dr. Amy Fox, DVM, shared with The Spruce Pets. “Human clippers could just glide over the fur and not actually cut the hair or the tool will get clogged too quickly to be effective.”
We tested 21 dog hair clippers on real dogs with a variety of grooming needs. All human participants are dedicated pet parents, but not professionally trained in dog grooming, so they relied on the instructions supplied by the manufacturer of the product they tested along with our testing methodology.

1.Oster Golden A5 Two-Speed Animal Grooming Clippers
I have a Labradoodle with both fur and hair. When she is clipped close its like he's made out of felt. It's thick.
He also is only 9 months and does not really enjoy the whole clipping experience so much. It tickles. And the buzzing makes him extra curious. So the clippers have to work good and fast.
These are the first ones that have been up to the job. A good balance of cost, durability, and function. In my limited experience these are best for just plowing through the coat and getting it short- really short. Down to about 1/4-1/2 inch. Effortlessly. Like shearing a sheep- if that was easy.
Trying to use them to "sculpt" or cut his hair not that short- challenging. They just dig in and start mowing.I bought a #3 skip tooth to try and get a longer cut. That is essentially a blade with a steel guard built in. Getting the longer teeth through his coat was not such an easy experience as the "miracle mow" of the original blade. And #5 skip tooth might be better. A wash and brush out might make the longer blade easier but jeeze...that's a lot of work to get to the cutting.
Don't know about detailed trimming with it. I just use curved blunt tip scissors because its easier to get him to hold still for that.
Other notes: good long cord; good shape in the hand; solid build; gets warm but not hot; blades don't get hot.
If you need to get a lot of thick hair and/or fur off of a dog, this is a solid machine.
2.neabot Neakasa P1 Pro Pet Grooming Kit & Vacuum Suction 99% Pet Hair
Bought this for use with our Seven dogs. I highly recommend this item. I first used it with my full Aussie doodle, she is usually a bear to groom so we usually keep her coat shorter. Not shaved. Just shorter. It had been a while since she had been to groomers, so she was pretty shaggy. With a little patience this device worked beautifully. The vacuum is not really loud and I had to empty it many times, but the results were awesome. I then used it on my English Shepherd, again another heavy coated dog, we usually keep him short for summer, these dogs are not workers and don’t stay outside except to play and potty. They love the shorter coat, much cooler for their summer. Also the guides work great, just be patient the first use. Recommend bath and dry before cutting. It’s excellent for hygiene cut for our breeding females and male. I look forward to using this device, it makes grooming and trimming very easy, just be patient when you use it the first time.
3.Wahl Professional Animal Bravura Pet
I am not a total beginner but this clipper is very helpful. I also bought the stainless steel guards which slide very nicely through the coat. I am always timid to clean the private areas but I did ok, very gently. The legs are also a challenge but the smallest comb on .07 setting did a great job and kept me from having to scissor cut. After an hour I still had 4 bars and the blade wasn't hot. The device is not very loud. This is a great tool for Shih Tzus because they have a lot of fluffy hair, which some clippers don't cut too well. This is my 3rd clipper (different models). The last one died. This one has a warranty. Thank you Wahl.
4.BEETRO 500W
I bought this to use on my two standard poodles. They are farm dogs and get overgrown and matted during winter. Regular professional grade grooming clippers weren’t heavy duty enough so I bought these a year ago. They work great and easily cut through the thick poodle hair. I’m extremely careful and don’t use this on all areas of the dogs, just on their torsos. It’s heavy and it gets hot so taking breaks helps. I’ve cut both my dogs hair several times and the blades are just now getting dull, whereas with my dog clippers I couldn’t even cut the hair on half a dog before the blade dulled.
5.Andis 24820 EasyClip Professional
I bought this for my dog because I didn't want to share my clippers. This one is about half the price of mine and it does seem less powerful, however my dog has a LOT more hair than me. It got the job done with no problems, well, not a fan of the plastic guards but they worked. I ordered a new blade 1/2" to use instead of the guard next time.
My dog wasn't a huge fan but i can only imagine how much worse a loud magnetic clipper would have been. This one is very quiet and the ceramic blade never got hot. It barely even got warm.

2. Types of Animal Hair Clippers
There are several types of animal hair clippers to choose from, each suited to different purposes.
Corded Clippers
Corded clippers provide consistent power and are ideal for professional groomers or individuals who groom multiple pets regularly. They are typically more powerful than cordless clippers and won't run out of battery during use.
Cordless Clippers
Cordless clippers offer mobility and flexibility, allowing you to move freely while grooming your pet. They are powered by rechargeable batteries, making them ideal for quick grooming sessions and small pets. However, battery life can be limited, so consider models with longer battery duration.
Adjustable Blade Clippers
Adjustable blade clippers allow you to change the cutting length quickly without the need to swap blades. This feature is convenient for grooming animals with different coat lengths or for finishing details with precision.
Single-Speed vs. Multi-Speed Clippers
3. Key Features to Look For
When shopping for the best animal hair clippers, keep an eye out for the following features to ensure you get the most suitable model.
1. Blade Quality
2. Motor Power
Motor power determines how easily clippers cut through different coat types. If you're grooming a thick or matted coat, choose clippers with higher motor power to ensure smooth and efficient performance.
3. Noise and Vibration
Look for clippers with low noise and vibration, as excessive sound and movement can cause anxiety in pets, making grooming sessions harder for both the pet and groomer.
4. Ergonomics and Comfort
Comfortable, ergonomic handles will help reduce hand fatigue, especially for long grooming sessions. Choose clippers with a grip that fits your hand comfortably and doesn’t cause strain.
5. Blade Length and Adjustability
Some clippers come with interchangeable or adjustable blades to allow for different cutting lengths. If you plan on doing detailed or customized cuts, adjustable blades will be especially useful.
6. Battery Life (For Cordless Models)
If you opt for cordless clippers, consider the battery life. Aim for a model that offers at least 60 to 90 minutes of runtime on a full charge. Quick charging time is also a great advantage.
4. Price Range
Animal hair clippers come in a wide price range. Here's a breakdown:
5. Top Brands to Consider
6. Customer Reviews
Always check customer reviews to get an idea of the real-world performance of a product. Reviews can reveal important insights, such as how well the clippers perform on different coat types, their noise level, and durability over time.
7. Additional Accessories
Some clippers come with accessories like comb attachments, cleaning tools, or carrying cases. These extras can improve the overall grooming experience, so consider whether additional items are essential for your needs.
Conclusion
Choosing the best animal hair clippers is crucial to ensuring a comfortable, stress-free grooming experience for both you and your pet. By understanding your pet's specific grooming needs, such as coat type, size, and temperament, you can select the clippers that will work best for your situation.
