‘Really getting clear as a team on what we mean when we’re throwing around words like trust is key. Trust is the foundational piece and when you have it you can build up to that radical candor which is so important; that ability to speak openly without fear. What we say is ‘hey we’ve got to have a candid conversation, get it all on the table’ and we’re only ever attacking the issues, never the person. When you start to realize that trust is the foundation of everything, it just builds and builds and the conversations just get richer and richer…’

To build more trust in your team, create cross-team collaboration projects. Assign small groups from different parts of the team to work on low-stakes, creative projects outside of their usual roles. This encourages trust through collaboration and helps team members see each other’s strengths in a new light.
