The Best 3 Ways to Invest in your People

The Best 3 Ways to Invest in your People

A friend of ours recently handed in their resignation letter at work, she was just fed up and decided to leave.?

“What about if we give you a £10K pay rise?” said the big boss.?

Well it was too little too late and she left anyway.??

Have you ever experienced that? Or maybe you know someone who has, or maybe you’ve been the boss and you’ve kicked yourself for not doing more to keep that person in the company.?

Unfortunately, this happens all too often and companies leave things far too late before trying to invest in their great people. Whatsmore if someone is disengaged enough in their job to leave, offering a pay rise is kind of like sticking a plaster on a severed artery - completely ineffective!?

Companies that get it right are the ones who create an environment where employees feel truly connected to their work and properly invested in. We treat our work as a partnership with our clients, and as such we’re always thinking of ways to help create that environment.

So how to invest in your people before they get fed up??

1. Opportunities to learn and grow:

Providing opportunities for employees to learn and grow is a great way to enhance their skills and knowledge, which can ultimately improve their job performance and job satisfaction.

Offering opportunities such as training programmes, mentorship, shadowing, and professional development courses are a way of saying "hey you, we spot you, we think you're awesome and we want to help you be the best version of you and give you even more awesome skills."

By investing in your people, you’re helping them become more adaptable, innovative in their thinking, and better equipped to handle changes in the workplace. Having highly skilled and knowledgeable team members can also give your organisation a competitive edge - be the employee that everyone wants to work for!?

2. Recognition:

Recognising your employees for their efforts will boost their morale and create a wider ripple effect of positivity. Overall a true culture of recognition, appreciation and respect will improve productivity and employee retention.

Giving recognition doesn’t have to necessarily mean big bonuses (although I’m sure your employees wouldn’t turn this down!), it can be as simple as providing written or verbal praise on a regular basis. Offering career advancement and personal development opportunities, creating in-house recognition programmes or being flexible with work arrangements are also ways of showing genuine appreciation for their contributions.

We’ve recently helped one of our clients revamp their internal recognition scheme, which includes values based recognition and quarterly awards presentations. If you’re interested in some support for your own organisation, let’s arrange a consultation.?

3. Culture and Connectedness:

We all like to feel a sense of belonging in both our personal and professional lives. Connectedness in an organisation refers to the degree to which your people feel like they belong, and their engagement with each other and the organisation's culture. It involves building strong relationships, enjoying shared experiences, encouraging open communication and promoting collaboration among team members.?

If you’re part of a remote or hybrid working team like most people are these days, it’s important to activate virtual methods to ensure continued connectedness. Things like virtual lunches, shout out slack channels, online internal networking, virtual workshops… or one of our favourites, the good old phone call.?

Nothing quite beats an in person get together when it comes to employee connectedness, and ensuring your teams feel invested in. Check out this short video as a great example.?
