Best 2020 New Models Guide: 15 Cars, Trucks, And SUVs Coming Soon
Jeep, Porsche, Volkswagen – take a deep dive on the future cars we expect over the next few years.
The automotive industry is arguably heading into an interesting direction with crossovers steadily taking the reign. Furthermore, every automaker worth its salt has already started implementing an electrification strategy that should start bearing fruit come into 2020. In that regard, even the near future 2020 new cars are radiating the kind of excitement that would otherwise be expected from vehicles scheduled to arrive at a much later date.
1. 2020 Alfa Romeo GTV
Status: All New
Release Date: Unknown
As part of FCA’s five-year strategy, Alfa Romeo will roll out a host of new vehicles – sports cars and SUVs alike. One of the most significant debuts will be the GTV. Based on the current Giulia, the new GTV will be a 600-horsepower (447-kilowatt) hybrid coupe with four seats and all wheel drive. Alfa hasn’t given an official release date.
2. 2020 Audi Sport EV
Status: All-new
Release Date: Late 2020
Audi Sport, the German automaker’s performance sub-brand, announced plans for an Audi Sport EV by 2020, which sounds great. But beyond that, there’s little to go on. The announcement was less about this particular vehicle and more about the brand’s overall plans for performance-oriented EVs, which include several more new vehicles over the next decade. We can bet the 2020 model won’t be a crossover, because Audi did specifically say the crossovers would be coming later. So… sedan? Coupe? Hatchback? Your guess is as good as ours.
3. BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe
Status: Variant
Release Date: Early 2020
To compete with the Mercedes-Benz CLA and other four-door coupes, BMW will bring its four-door 2 Series Gran Coupe out to play. The 2er will be all-wheel drive only in the U.S., and should come powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine producing upwards of 302 horsepower.
4. 2020 BMW i4
Status: All New
Release Date: Late 2019
Unlike the i3 and the i8, the BMW i4 will be the brand’s first fully electric mass-market vehicle – and its design will be inspired by the Vision Dynamics Concept. Reports suggest the EV will have a driving range of up to 435 miles (700 kilometers), and will arrive either late in 2019 or early 2020.
5. 2020 BMW M3
Status: Redesign
Release date: Early 2019
In early December, BMW announced plans to launch 26 new or redesigned M models by 2020. That’s a lot of Ms (BMW says it’ll be a mix of true M models and M-Performance trim levels), and we can only speculate about most of them. Here’s what we do know: the fan-favorite M3 will be at the center of the project, with the M4 models at its side. The 2020 M3 is expected to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this spring, and we’ll report more as soon as we can.
6. 2020 BMW X3e
Status: Variant
Release Date: Unknown
In fall 2016, BMW confirmed its plans to go ahead with an all-electric version of the X3 SUV, and last summer, announced its arrival some time for the 2020 model year. Beyond that, we don’t know much else. The X3e (or iX3) will share the X3e’s platform and most components; the electric powertrain will likely be borrowed from the BMW "i" lineup. Price-wise, the X3e will probably land somewhere between the base and top-end X3 trim levels.
7. 2020 Genesis G70 Coupe
Status: Variant
Release Date: Late 2019
As we’ve previously noted, the Genesis G70 sedan (pictured above) is well on its way to success in the 2019 model year. We’re looking forward to the upcoming coupe version, which is designed to compete against luxury two-door models from the German brands. Look for the same turbo four-cylinder and twin-turbo V6 powertrains that are offered in the sedan, along with similar pricing. If the G70 lineup is a hit, Genesis may introduce a wagon.
8. 2020 Mazdaspeed3
Status: Variant
Release Date: Late 2019
Late last year, Mazda debuted its new 3 hatchback and sedan at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Mazda’s new Skyactiv-X (though absent from L.A.) is supercharged, expected to reduce fuel consumption by about 30 percent, and projected for availability later this year. But we could see some of that same tech carry over to the hot version of the 3 hatch, too. A new Mazdspeed3 model is expected this generation.
9. 2020 Mercedes-Benz EQC
Status: All-New
Release Date: Late 2019
As part of Mercedes-Benz's electric push, the EQC concept will be the first fully electric SUV from the German marque. The near-production prototype debuted last year at a private event in Stockholm, and in the States at CES in Vegas shortly thereafter, but probably won't go on sale until late this year or early 2020.
10. 2020 Porsche 911 Hybrid
Status: Variant
Release Date: Unknown
The next generation of the Porsche 911 is here, complete with upgrades in the tech and performance department, above all else. But Porsche is still relatively quiet on the upcoming powertrain lineup. Rumors suggest a plug-in 911 is coming, and like most 911s before it, there will probably be turbos involved.
11. 2020 Porsche Taycan
Status: All-New
Release Date: September, 2019
Porsche teased its first fully electric vehicle, the Taycan, by way of the Mission E concept way back in 2015. But as we inch towards the 2020 model year, the Taycan is closer to production. The new electric Porsche will debut this September, and should go on sale sometime next year as a 2020 model.
12. 2020 Volkswagen I.D. Crozz
Status: All-New
Release date: Unknown
Volkswagen is trying like mad to distance itself from diesel, hence its current show-circuit crew of cartoonish yet charming EVs. The I.D. Crozz will be the first of that group to arrive in the United States, according to the latest information from the L.A. Auto Show. The I.D. Crozz is a compact crossover coupe powered by a pair of electric motors, one on each axle, for a combined output of 302 horsepower and an estimated range of 300 miles. The I.D. Crozz also features VW’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system. No pricing information is available yet beyond VW’s assurances that the I.D. Crozz will be "affordable."ime next year as a 2020 model.
13. 2020 Jeep Wrangler Plug-In Hybrid
Status: Variant
Release Date: Unknown
Two years following the redesigned 2018 Jeep Wrangler, it will be joined in showrooms and on trails by a new plug-in hybrid model. There are few details about this radical new Wrangler, but plenty of speculation, namely that it’s likely to borrow powertrain components from the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. If that’s the case, we can expect about 33 miles of pure electric range. An EcoDiesel model is also in the works. Stay tuned for more details about pricing and availability in the coming months.
14. 2020 Hyundai Santa Cruz Pickup
Status: All-new
Release Date: Sometime In 2020
In 2015, Hyundai arrived at the Detroit Auto Show with a crossover-based light pickup concept called the Santa Cruz. This summer, Hyundai announced that the Santa Cruz has been green-lit for production and will join the brand’s Stateside lineup for the 2020 model year. The production Santa Cruz will be based on the Santa Fe crossover, but Hyundai hasn’t shared any powertrain options. The concept featured a 2.0-liter turbodiesel, but that will almost certainly change (unless Hyundai also plans to use a turbodiesel in the new crossover models on the previous slide). We’ll be on the lookout for more details.
15. 2020 Genesis GV80
Status: All-new
Release Date: Summer 2019
Between 2019 and 2021, Genesis plans to introduce three crossovers, effectively doubling the luxury brand’s lineup. The GV80 midsize crossover will be first out of the gate, and will look much like it did when it was unveiled in concept form at this year’s New York Auto Show. The GV70, based on the 2018 G70 sedan, is up next, to be followed by a "crossover utility vehicle." All are currently expected to be part of the class of 2020. The GV80 is up on Genesis’ site, though no pricing information is available; we’ll keep you posted on these new Genesis models as we learn more.
