All Industry Accreditation cards will expire at the end of 2024
Why is Industry Accreditation ending? What has led to the changes in Industry Accreditation? - These two questions are our most frequently asked questions and we realise that many of you have been in the industry for years, so we want to make sure you understand why and how these changes have come about.
What is ‘Industry Accreditation'?
Sometimes referred to as ‘Grandfather Rights,’ Industry Accreditation (IA,) allowed individuals to obtain CSCS-backed cards based on their experience without the need for a qualification. However, these will be phased out as of 31st December 2024 and all current cardholders will require relevant approved qualifications to maintain their access to site.
Why is this happening?
Following the Grenfell disaster and subsequent report authored by Dame Judith Hackitt , it was evident that more needed to be done to ensure competence across the construction industry.
The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) has played a significant role in driving up standards through its recommendation on industry card schemes, the CLC recommendation has been adopted across the industry, with the result that cards carrying the CSCS logo are specified and promoted for those undertaking recognised construction occupations.
The team at BESA understand that some of you have been working on sites for many years, and whilst these changes can seem frustrating, they are fundamental for ensuring competence and compliance moving forward.?
We've got your back, how BESA can support you in preparing for the end of Industry Accreditation
BESA want to ensure that those affected by Industry Accreditation know that we're here to help, and to achieve this BESA has appointed a new Skills Policy Team to provide information, advice and guidance to industry colleagues and to negotiate fair coverage of providers who can assist those affected to gain the necessary qualifications.
The Skills Policy Team continue to attend, many events, webinars, forums to convey these messages to BESA Members and the wider industry. If anyone needs more information or would like to discuss specific routes, training options or other questions please contact the Skills Policy Team, or visit the BESA IA Hub
