This investment does not signal any immediate strategic move on Richemont, according to sources familiar with the matter. Both LVMH and Richemont have declined to comment on the acquisition.

Richemont, controlled by 74-year-old South African billionaire Johann Rupert, is currently navigating a succession challenge, making it a potential target for speculation. Cartier, a crown jewel in Richemont's portfolio, has been of significant interest to LVMH in the past. LVMH’s interest in expanding its jewelry division was also highlighted by its $15.8 billion acquisition of Tiffany in 2021 and its recent purchase of Swiza, the owner of the ornate desk clock maker L’Epée 1839.

Despite the modest nature of Arnault's investment in Richemont, it underscores his reputation as a shrewd and strategic investor.
