Berenika Kowalska one of the best Polish artists of the young generation.
Berenika Kowalska on one's maturing towards art, on pitfalls one falls into when creating, on truth and lies in painting and on where to find this truth.
It started with colour. With yellow.
Yellow and white. I felt them physically. A bit like 'If you don’t give in to this food craving now, you’ll die.' One drives oneself into a state, where yellow is a must. You see yellow everywhere. Only this colour exists, others don’t matter. Other colours burn, and you can’t touch them. Actually, I already had the courage, but I was still playing it safe, and for my first yellow painting I thought I would once again use plant motifs. The result was lucent traces. But the very process of working on this painting was painful. I turned over a new leaf, and that meant letting go of all things past. On the other hand, my previous figurative, ornamental paintings were received well. People bought them. I was recognisable. I could just go on like this for life. But I realised, there was no turning back for me...
