Lots of things happened this week so let's jump right into it.

Is BeReal the most promising startup in the creator economy? - The Information published a list of the 50 most promising startups for 2022 and my eyes went directly to the creator section. #1 is BeReal. Really? I get it, the app has disrupted the creator space and grown immensely in the last year but I’m not sure that out of all the amazing creator startups this is the one that deserved the top spot.?

Creators feel screwed by big platforms, according to Patreon - A new report by Patreon reveals that while most creators rely on platforms like IG, YT & TT to distribute their content, 70% of them feel screwed, highlighting the importance of diversifying their presence on other creator platforms. Creators have been rightfully complaining about random algorithm updates for years. Props to Patreon for speaking up for creators and providing solutions on this topic.

Everyone’s freaking out about YouTube’s 2% drop in ad revenue - YouTube had a YoY drop in ad revenue by 2%, likely for the first time since it was acquired by Alphabet. I think there’s no reason to freak out but people have very different opinions on this topic. Jim Louderback explores 6 potential reasons why revenue went down, objective and solid. On one hand, Dylan Harari explains why this situation is a wake-up call for both platforms and creators and how none should be 100% reliant on ad revenue. On the other hand, Avi Gandhi explains that this is not enough reason for creators to be driven off-platform nor for platforms to panic. In my opinion, they’re both right to some extent.?

YouTube gets a fresh new makeover - Speaking of YouTube, the platform is getting a makeover! I’m sure you’ve already seen some images or it’s already been updated on your device but it looks clean and has a TV-like feel. With the platform surpassing Netflix with streaming I’m not surprised they went for the TV, streaming service feel.?

4 predictions for the creator economy by Colin & Samir - The end of the year is closing in and predictions for 2023 are coming in hot. Colin & Samir highlighted 4 main problems creators are facing and 4 predictions on topics that have been buzzing frequently - mental health, management & operations, and of course, monetization. The creators have spoken, now it’s up to companies to educate and support creators in building healthy & sustainable careers.??

Meet the new creators: LinkedInfluencers - While I’m cringing at this term I’m also happy to see a new breed of creators slowly coming into the spotlight. LinkedIn may not offer on-platform monetization (yet) but that doesn’t stop its creators from building businesses with content as their foundation. Ghostwriting freelancers and agencies are getting more and more popular.

Creators are interested in Web3 but not enough to take action - Interesting thread by Ezra Cooperstein shares the opinions of Night Media creators on Web3. Many are interested to learn more but they’re also extremely cautious and that stops them from taking action. I see why they feel that way. The Web3 space is still in its infancy + a thriving space for misinformation and scammers.?

I agree that the most important type of creator economy startup is the one that gives creators more independence and platform ownership. Every startup that provides meaningful solutions to that issue could develop into a building block of the next iteration of the creator economy. In that same vein, web3 is a very interesting development. But creators are skeptical, understandably so #scams. And yet, the fundamental premises of the technology, i.e. more ownership, decentralization, and scarcity, are highly relevant to them. So how can we make all this more accessible and useful to creators? Well, I'm certainly biased but here's what we do with Unyfy: we get rid of all the crypto-y and techy fuzz and simply build a product for creators. Creating, for example, an NFT that doubles as an access pass to content or community interactions, is as simple as publishing a blog post. And neither the creator nor the fan need any cryptocurrency in the process. I think ease and familiarity are the keys to making web3 catch on among creators. It's not about the NFTs or tokens per se but about what creators and fans can do with them.

Super informative. Thanks for putting this together. We shouldn't need to re-learn the lessons of diversifying revenue streams (not just relying on ad revenue) and bringing people back to platforms we own but it seems like we do. I love seeing the rise of creators, including here on LI.
