Reimagining Reality

Driving the news: Imagine reality cranked up a notch. Greg Demchak and his team at Bentley Systems are doing just that with a new advanced visualization platform for displaying infrastructure digital twins, which are highly detailed digital replicas of physical structures.?Powered by Epic Games’ Unreal videogame engine and other technology, the solution reimagines infrastructure as a hyper-realistic, video game-style experience with striking fidelity. It transforms geospatial, engineering and architectural data into photorealistic, immersive environments. Imagine being able to walk over a bridge or tour a building before a single beam is laid.

Interesting fact: The solution’s secret sauce is?Bentley’s acquisition of Cesium, the 3D geospatial company, and its?new partnership with Google.?Anyone with an infrastructure digital twin hosted on Bentley’s iTwin platform will be able to use the technology—whether for a single building, a campus, a road network or an enormous infrastructure project like HS2, the high-speed rail network in the U.K.

Digital Twin Revolution in 5G

Driving the news: The future of connectivity is getting mapped out. Digital twins of cell towers enhanced with artificial intelligence and machine learning are becoming an indispensable tool for building out and maintaining #5G cellular networks. Using data from drones and other sources, digital twins can help the telecom industry accurately account for the equipment attached to the top of each tower, plan upgrades, and uncover and fix potential defects and anomalies before they affect customers. With digital twins, planning a network is less guesswork and more science.

?Interesting fact: Bentley has already helped operators digitize more than 25,000 cell towers across the United States.

AI Pothole Patrol?

Driving the news (literally): Goodbye pothole, our old nemesis. The startup Blyncsy —which uses AI, machine vision and cloud computing to monitor road conditions—just released a?comprehensive public map?of all interstate highways in the continental U.S. The AI-enabled map shows key roadway assets such as guardrails, speed limit signs and work zones to support roadway safety, maintenance and repair operations of deteriorating and at-risk roads.?

Interesting fact: The new map uses crowdsourced dashcam images from more than 1 million vehicles on the road today. When coupled with Blyncsy’s powerful AI image analysis toolset, the new map can detect over 40 different road conditions and asset inventory issues in near-real time. The data is available to all state Department of Transportation (DOT) agencies in the U.S.

The Future of Infrastructure Is Open?

Driving the News: Bentley is all-in on openness in infrastructure. Why? “A road, a bridge or a dam might be in operation for 50 years or more, undergoing repairs, upgrades and expansions,” explains Bentley CEO Nicholas Cumins . “By ensuring that our systems remain open, we allow organizations to adopt new technologies and innovations while still being able to access and build on historical data.” Cumins notes that ?openness is not just about connecting different software: “It is about structuring and organizing data so that it can be queried, analyzed and reused across multiple platforms.” And despite the urgent need for resilient infrastructure, Cumins says there aren’t enough engineers to meet the demand. “Backlogs are growing, and projects are stacking up.”

Interesting Fact: Many infrastructure assets generate gigabytes of data every day. But only a small fraction—10% or less—is ever analyzed.

Bentley’s Big Moment

Driving the News: Bentley Systems hosted its 20th Year in Infrastructure and Going Digital Awards, often called the “Oscars of Infrastructure,” last month in Vancouver. The event featured interactive demos, real-world case studies and keynotes from industry leaders. Major news included a partnership with Google and advances in AI and generative AI, digital twins and open-source visualization. The Going Digital Awards highlighted projects using these tools to make infrastructure more sustainable, resilient and smarter.

Interesting Fact: One solution using generative AI can propose construction site designs up to 10 times faster than traditional methods and with greater accuracy.??

Partners in Progress

Driving the News: Bentley is tapping into its global network of software resellers, developers, integrators and other partners to digitize critical infrastructure and make it more sustainable and resilient. More than 230 representatives from 160 Bentley partners around the world gathered in Nice, France, for the Bentley Partner Summit 2024 in late October.

Interesting Fact: Bentley offers its partners access to over 400 products across 60 brands, along with marketing and regional engagement support, and dedicated assistance from our team. “But perhaps the biggest advantage is that partnering with Bentley accelerates product development, allowing partners to quickly reach the market without reinventing the wheel,” says Pascal Liens Martinez, Bentley’s senior director of build and interoperability, ecosystem and ventures.

Quote of the Week:

“It’s absolutely amazing. I’m super excited about the potential of [advanced visualizations] for cities like Dublin. How we can engage with our citizens, how we can look at new plans for the city is going to make a huge difference for what we can do in terms of infrastructure and planning.”— Jamie Cudden , smart city program manager, Dublin City Council

I’ve been reflecting on Bentley’s latest innovations, and it’s hard not to imagine how this will reshape our construction industry. Tools like digital twins, video game engines, and AI are not just buzzwords—they’re game changers that could revolutionize the way we plan, build, and manage projects. For instance: ?? Digital Twins in 5G: This isn’t just for telecom; in construction, it could optimize designs and enable real-time decisions, creating smarter and more adaptive workflows. ?? Open Data and Immersive Visualization: Access to open data combined with engines like Unreal could allow us to not just visualize but experience projects before breaking ground, reducing planning risks significantly. The real challenge, though, isn’t the technology—it’s how we embrace it as professionals. This requires a shift in mindset, investments, and a willingness to lead the change. I firmly believe our industry needs to adopt these innovations through proactive management and open collaboration. If we do, we’ll build a future that’s smarter, more efficient, and sustainable. What do you think? Are we ready to bring these technologies into our projects? ??
