The Benefits YOUR Employees Want are not the same as the Benefits YOU Want!
The fact is that this is a common issue we address when talking with business owners. You open a business, you are the only employee, you buy insurance that makes sense for you and your family. Then, as you grow and hire a few employees, you offer those same benefits to them. And so on, and so on.
Now you have a dozen, hundreds, or even thousands of employees and the benefits you once upon a time chose that were right for you and your family are not right for your employees. See, I’m a business owner myself. I have a $12,000 deductible health plan. It does not cover ANYTHING, including doctors office visits and prescription drugs, until I meet that deductible. Why did I choose this plan? Because I am worried about the catastrophic, as most business owners are. I can afford a few hundred or thousand dollars out of pocket to save a lot of money on my insurance premiums. However I don’t want to lose my home, my savings and my investments if I develop a chronic illness or have a serious accident costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. I am worried about the BIG things, not the little things.
But it is different for your employees! Lest say I’m an employee of your company making $12-$18 an hour. A $12,000 deductible health plan is unattainable for me. Most Americans wont spend that out of pocket during the course of a year. And that deductible is equal to half or more of my after tax income for an entire year. I rent, I don’t own a home, I don’t have a retirement plan or savings account and I don’t have large assets I am concerned about losing. I may not even have a checking account. And I probably live paycheck to paycheck like the majority of the workforce. So I this concept wont work for me. I cant pay a $12,000 deductible, $300 for an urgent care visit, or pay for my prescriptions out of my pocket until my deductible is met. These are not realistic options. I want first dollar benefits that let me go to the doctor, get free check-ups, take my kids for their checkups, go to the urgent care and get my prescriptions. And I want to spend less than $100 per month.
The whole reason that you are offering benefits as an employer is to attract and retain quality employees while staying competitive in the industry. And most employers care that their employees are getting the benefits they need and want. But they don’t draw the line or draw a distinction between what they want and need as a business owner making a six figure income and what their employees want and need while living paycheck to paycheck.
We help employers analyze their current employee benefits package, look at their different classes of employees, and propose solutions that are right for everyone within their company. So that your benefits package is perceived as what it’s supposed to be, a “benefit”!

4 年Great points. It is important to have a system in place that benefits the employee, being able to choose options that suits their needs is equally important.

4 年I think something important to understand is when it comes to benefits you need to do a benefits analysis first. Find need, not cost. Cost comes second. Find out what the client and their employees need and then figure out how to make it fit into their budget. There are so many cost savings tools as well that employers just dont know about.
