Benefits of a Work Breakdown Structure

As a project manager, you may or may not use work breakdown structures (WBSs). If you are new to formal project management, work breakdown structures provide clarity on the work to be performed on the project.

What are the benefits of using a WBS? Consider this starter list:

• Supports the 100% rule (defines all the work of the project, not more, and not less).
• Provides a visual mapping of the work to be performed.
• Provides a crucial component of the scope baseline.
• Provides the structure for organizing the activities of the project.
• Provides the structure for determining the project budget.
• Provides a foundation for planning.
• Helps prevent unnecessary and unauthorized scope changes.
• Facilitates communication and collaboration with the team and stakeholders.
• Provides a basis for estimating resources, schedules, and costs.
• Facilitates mentoring of new team members and stakeholders.
