Benefits of Using Diatomaceous Earth in Starch Filtration

When selecting diatomaceous earth (DE) for starch filtration, choosing a grade with the appropriate permeability and particle size distribution is important to achieve effective filtration while maintaining the desired flow rate. The permeability of DE is often measured in Darcys.

  • 0.2 Darcys: Fine grade for very high-clarity filtrate.
  • 0.5 Darcys: Medium grade offering a balance between clarity and flow rate.
  • 1 Darcys: Coarser grade for higher flow rates with moderate clarity.

For starch filtration, DE grades with lower permeability (0.1 to 3 Darcys) are generally preferred to balance filtration efficiency and flow rate. These grades can provide clearer filtrate by capturing finer particles.
