If you’re a professional living abroad and trying to advance your career or business, you may have heard about personal branding—but what is it, and why does it matter? A study published in Frontiers in Psychology examined the impact of personal branding on career success and showed that creating a solid brand can make all the difference in how your career grows.
The study, conducted by Sergey Gorbatov and colleagues, hypothesized that personal branding positively impacts career satisfaction and perceived employability. Essentially, it aimed to see whether personal branding—promoting yourself strategically to create a professional image—could lead to greater career opportunities and job satisfaction.
The research was conducted in two parts:
1. Study 1: It looked at 263 participants to validate a newly developed personal branding scale and examined how personal branding impacts perceived employability and career satisfaction.
2. Study 2: This part focused on the reasons why people choose to engage in personal branding. It considered factors like career aspirations, feedback, and self-confidence.
The researchers recruited participants from both Western and Asian cultural contexts, providing a broad view of how personal branding works across cultures. They used surveys and measured personal branding behaviors through an 18-item scale, ensuring a detailed assessment.
Key Findings
The findings were fascinating and provide practical insights for professionals living abroad:
1. Personal branding boosts employability and satisfaction: Personal branding was shown to increase perceived employability, which means people who engaged in building their professional brand felt more confident about their career opportunities. The study also found a link between employability and career satisfaction—so creating a strong personal brand isn’t just about getting hired, it’s also about feeling good in your job.
- Number to note: Personal branding was moderately correlated with employability (r = 0.48) and weakly correlated with career satisfaction (r = 0.28). This shows that focusing on personal branding has tangible benefits for your professional growth.
2. Career achievement aspiration drives branding: The study highlighted that career aspirations were the strongest predictor for engaging in personal branding. If you’re motivated to reach new career heights, personal branding becomes a natural tool for self-promotion.
3. Feedback might work against branding: Surprisingly, people who received a lot of career feedback were less likely to engage in personal branding. This might be because they felt they didn’t need extra visibility or were already receiving other forms of career support.
How to Apply These Findings to Your Career
So, how can you apply these insights to break through career barriers? Here are some practical steps:
1. Create your brand narrative
Think of personal branding as telling your story. What makes you unique? What skills do you bring to the table that can make you stand out in your industry? Create a narrative that reflects your values, skills, and experiences in a way that speaks directly to your target audience.
2. Use social media to your advantage
Social media platforms like LinkedIn are powerful tools for personal branding. Start sharing your insights, projects, and successes online. As noted in the study, having a visible online presence helps you build credibility and connect with opportunities.
3. Be consistent
Personal branding requires consistency. Make sure your professional image—both online and offline—aligns with your career goals. Regularly update your profile, engage with relevant content, and ensure your narrative is consistent across all channels.
4. Leverage your cultural background
For diaspora professionals, embracing your cultural identity can be a great asset. Integrate the strengths of your background with your professional persona to offer a unique perspective in your field. Employers value diversity, and showcasing how your experience adds value can be a strong differentiator.
Personal branding isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a strategy that can help you advance in your career by positioning yourself in a positive light and connecting you to opportunities that align with your aspirations. By building your brand thoughtfully, you can navigate career barriers and find success, even when faced with the challenges of living abroad.
