The Benefits of IIoT Technology in Manufacturing Systems
Electrical and Control Systems
Electrical, Process Measurement and Control
The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) forms part of Industry 4.0 which is made up of other technologies like AI, cloud & edge computing, AI, augmented/virtual reality, etc. Many manufacturing firms are already implementing some of these technologies in their manufacturing systems or have plans to incorporate them in their future projects.
IIoT is a common theme in smart manufacturing, thus in real sense, you can’t mention for instance smart factories and fail to recognize the benefits of IIoT technology to these systems.
The IIoT technology is the basis for many smart manufacturing solutions for example: manufacturing execution systems (MES), machine learning (ML), AI, Big Data, enterprise resource planning (ERP), etc. At the ground level, the IIoT functions as a type of middleware by providing a communication backbone between devices, machines, controllers, databases, information systems and the operators/users. This facilitates the monitoring, management and maintenance of the connected devices and machines.

The IIoT technology can leverage and extend the existing technologies. Items like sensors and sensor data, automation, control systems, communication between different machines, have existed in manufacturing systems for years, and all of them can be integrated with IIoT.
The IIoT connects into information systems like manufacturing execution systems (MES) and ERP systems, implementing transactions, delivering data, driving analytics and supporting real-time visibility. Additionally some IIoT platforms provide advanced capabilities for data collection, data aggregation, data visualization and data analyses.
