Benefits of Decluttering
I realized I have clearer mind and better productivity after decluttering the house, hence, I am going to talk about the benefits of decluttering. What? How does declutter related to my profession, image consultation? IT DOES. Decluttering requires ones to identify what are the things they need in their daily life and what does not. Be it the kitchen utensils, toys, handbags, clothes even papers and email in Leo Baubata’s perspective. He is the author of the book “The power of LESS”. After reading his book and watching documentary “The Minimalist”, I looked at my closet and told myself is time.
As I completed my image consultation course early this year, I do realize there are styles, cuttings, and certain qualities of the shirts that do not suit me anymore. Furthermore, it was a fact that I belong to the cool color family, to be specific, Cool Winter or Light Summer for the 12 color seasons. So, I practiced what I learnt in the book & the documentary, to giveaway the clothes that I rarely wear. It is definitely one of the processes to reinforce who I am as I always believe the clothes we wear project the self image that we want to display to our partner, clients, or even strangers.
The story above leads me to write this article, about the BENEFITS of decluttering based on my experience.
1. Clearer Mind
When the working desk is cluttered, the mind is distracted too based on the study by Princeton Neuroscience Institute . Once I tidied up the desk, my mind can now focus & thus increase productivity & creative to design my website, preparing the online sharing videos for my Instagram, and including writing this article.
2. Know Yourself Better & Save money
As I declutter the room, for example, I must ask myself “Is the quality of the handbag speak of my profession?”, “Is the color of the bag match with most of my closet?” “how often I am going to use this?”. After asking these questions to myself, I can now make the decision. This applies to decluttering your clothings, accessories and papers. Ask yourself relevant questions to decide what you really need and donate or sell online for those that you don't. You might find what you need when you are decluttering, helping you to save money because you know found them!
3. Easier to Clean
If you are like me, water jet the house once every 3 months, you would definitely thank yourself in the future that you made the decision to declutter the house now. The less unnecessary stuff at home, the shorter time spent to clean. Agree?
4. Lose weight
The "stress" hormone named Cortisol can cause our bodies to hold onto fat and increase the risk of inflammation, causing us to gain weight. As we declutter, our metabolism is increased and cortisol will reduce, this results we crave less for high sugary and fatty foods, and we can lose weight.
5. Live longer
It sparks the joy not when I found something, but when I am getting rid of things that I no longer need. It is the psychological effect that told me "Good job! You have just completely declutter this room!”
Once you identify the benefits and how declutter can help you improve and be productive, you can slip in this activity for just 5 to 10minutes a day into your “To Do Task”. Feel free to download the Infography of Decluttering designed by myself :)
Happy decluttering!
