The Benefits Of Critical Thinking

In the fast-paced and competitive sales world, critical thinking is a vital skill that empowers sellers to excel.

Critical Thinking is?“the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue to form a judgment.”

Regarding sales, it describes a thought process where sellers do not accept information at face value. Instead, they are discerning, questioning underlying arguments, respectfully challenging assumptions, and working to understand preconceptions and conclusions more fully before attempting to “pitch” a solution.

Top-performing sellers are critical thinkers. They seek to understand before seeking to be understood.

All of us, in varying degrees, are vulnerable to our conditioning: our previous experiences, our viewpoints, and our emotional attachments to pre-conditioned biases, often without realizing it. As a result, we become lazy thinkers, make unconscious assumptions and judgments, or accept ideas without question or scrutiny because it fits in with our vision of the situation or our narrative.

The more sellers know (or think they know), the less time they invest in evaluating and assessing the prospective customer’s situation before acting on their hypotheses, often leading the seller to recommend an ineffective solution.

So, what’s the seller’s critical thinking process look like?

  • Gather all the necessary information
  • Assess and validate the information
  • Create a range of valid options and choices
  • Decide – exercising sound?judgment

Today’s sellers will be severely handicapped if they do not have critical thinking skills.

By honing their critical thinking skills, sellers can analyze customer needs, solve complex problems, build credibility and trust, and foster stronger relationships. In addition, embracing critical thinking equips sellers with the tools they need to thrive in their careers and achieve long-term success.
