The Benefits of Breathwork or Why it should be part of Your Wellness Routine
For many, feeling balanced and calm while running a busy career sounds impossible.?
So what to do to center yourself and perform at your best when you are time-poor??
Well, there is something you can do at any point in time, in a meeting room, in a taxi, in front of your computer or even in front of your boss… and it is simply to BREATHE.
When we are trying to perform at peak performance all the time, and want to be high achievers in every aspect of our life, we might as well deregulate our nervous system while trying to achieve our goals. To give ourselves the chance to slow down, take mental and physical breaks, accept fewer challenges (professionals or personals) is actually doing ourselves a favor.
We need to remember that our physical, mental and emotional health are much more important than anything else in life.
Here are some symptoms of an unbalanced nervous system :
When our nervous system is dysregulated we feel anything but calm and feel like in fight, flight or freeze constantly. The good news is that Breathwork helps you to regulate, reset and rebalance your nervous system really quickly.?
How does that work? When we breathe short, quick shallow breaths our body isn’t able to absorb as much oxygen and we stimulate our fight or flight response (sympathetic nervous system), which is sending a message to our brain that we are in danger and our body activates its stress response. There are times when this can be useful and beneficial but for everyday life it’s important that we allow our bodies to receive optimal oxygen with slow, deep diaphragmatic breaths (which is activating the parasympathetic nervous system).
1. What is Breathwork?
Lately Breathwork has been acclaimed by many business execs, athletes, scientists, artists for being the latest wellness trend. But the origins of Breathwork can be actually traced back to ancient India, China and Japan, with many of the techniques developed back then still being practiced today. In addition, there are modern breathwork techniques that recently became popular like Wim Hof or Holotropic Breathwork.?
Breathwork is a mindfulness activity and an umbrella-term describing quite a wide range of conscious breathing practices that promote breath awareness and encompass a variety of breath control techniques.
Each Breathwork exercise has a specific goal, some aiming to relax and reset, others meant to feel energised or to heal physical and emotional traumas.
People often ask what’s the difference between Breathwork and Meditation. While Breathwork is a tool, meditation is a state. By giving to our minds a task, to focus on our breath, our minds are much easier to calm.?
So the breath helps us to reach a meditative state, but this is not what a Breathwork class is about. A Breathwork class is about teaching you to use your diaphragm to breathe properly, so you can reset your nervous system when you feel it’s dysregulated. You can learn various techniques - some that you will connect more with than others - so you can pratice them on your own whenever you need it the most.
Breathwork to me is part of my “Life tools”, it is a tool that brings me out of the stress response, very quickly. It is also a tool that I use like a compass, if I feel that my breath is short or shallow, it means that my body is starting to get dysregulated by stress, anxiety, frustrations, anger or fear.
The state of our breath is giving us cues about our mental and emotional state.
