THE BENEFITS OF ASSESSMENTS IN BASIC EDUCATION

Every educational system aims to foster learning and instill knowledge in students and assessments are used to measure the effectiveness and progress of a learning process.
Assessments are tools used to gather information about a learning experience. They are important not only in educational settings but in any learning experience.
Before getting a driver’s license, you will need to take theory and practical classes. At the end of all classes, you will take a final assessment to test if you have learned all that is required and if you qualify for the license.
During this final assessment, the instructor observes the learner and identifies the learner’s strong points and weak points, and then knows precisely how to help out. This sums up what assessments are all about.
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) defines assessment as an organized procedure used to obtain information about children through tests, examinations, projects, observation, and other sources to make judgments.
TYPES OF ASSESSMENT
1.????Diagnostic; this is usually done at the beginning of a learning process; a teacher can instruct students to write what they know about a topic before discussing it. This is done to assess students’ knowledge of the topic.
2.????Formative: an example is the brief tests after a module of learning; it occurs within the learning process and there is immediate feedback.
3.????Interim/Benchmark: this is used to test a large number of students to measure their progress in a specific area of study.
4.????Summative: this could be done at the end of a learning process, such as a final examination. An example of this is the “Common Entrance Examination” you write to get into Junior Secondary School
BENEFITS OF ASSESSMENTS
1.????Measure the effectiveness of learning
This is a feedback tool that teachers can use to develop themselves. Assessments help students and teachers know how well a topic or subject has been understood.
2.????Guides the planning of learning experiences
When you get the results from an assessment, you can tell if you need to modify or eliminate a certain activity or method of teaching.
3.????It helps identify points of strengths and weaknesses

Most times, you can tell strengths from the subjects aced and weaknesses from subjects with lower grades.
4.????Identify children who may need additional support from their tutors
From their performance on a test, you can tell if a child needs some help.
One sure way to know if all students have a good understanding of a subject taught is to give a task to test their knowledge; that way, you can identify which students need support in a particular subject.
5.????Educators and parents/guardians can develop a strategy to help the child
There is an “open day” event in the traditional school setting. This is an event where parents come to school and interact with teachers about their child’s academic performance. Here, they are able to discuss ways both parties can support the child.
In online learning, there is an analysis dashboard and there are assessments that help students, parents, and teachers to monitor students’ performance. ??
