Benedict Arnold/The Psychology
Question why did he betray his country? Theories proposed greed, debt, resentment, hatred are but a few of the many.
Once valued admired as a hero, yet he is also synoymos with traitor, while there are no questions as to the betrayal being clear. Questions about what led up to it are complicated and not political suggested by some. If you know the story there were nasty rumors told and spread about him without proof of the allegations, Arnold was also heavly in debt and certainly had character flaws, some thought he had little to no compassion and was sociopath. He had anger issues and was thought to be selfish and suffered from low self-esteem developed in childhood. The British thought him to be dishonorable and untrustworthy, Arnold even after being discovered as to being a traitor he continued. Some theories around the psychological aspects of him blame his childhood, others inject midlife crisis while other's suggest his young wife putting pressure on him financially. Arnold justified his actions in an open letter titled To The Inhabitants of America published in newspapers October 1780. In a letter to George Washington requesting safe passage for his wife this quote stands out Love to my country actuates my present conduct, however it may appear inconsistent to the world, who very seldom judge right of any man's actions. Benjamin Franklin wrote Judas sold only one man,Arnold three million. The question in the end is does character matter?
