As I stepped off the plane in Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and curiosity. This tiny Balkan country, nestled between Croatia and Albania, has been on my radar for years, and I was finally here to experience its magic. And, oh, did it deliver!
From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the breathtaking scenery that surrounded me. Towering mountains, crystal-clear lakes, and winding rivers all vied for my attention, making it clear that Montenegro is a nature lover's paradise. But it's not just the natural beauty that makes this country so special – it's the rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality of the Montenegrin people that truly sets it apart.
My journey began in the stunning Bay of Kotor, a fjord-like inlet that's often referred to as the "most beautiful bay in the world." And, trust me, it lives up to the hype. As I sailed through the bay's crystal-clear waters, I marveled at the towering cliffs, picturesque villages, and ancient fortresses that dot the landscape. It's a place where time stands still, where the past and present blend seamlessly together.
From Kotor, I made my way to the historic town of Budva, with its cobblestone streets, charming piazzas, and ancient city walls. This is a place where you can feel the weight of history, where the Venetian and Ottoman influences are still palpable. And yet, despite its rich heritage, Budva has a vibrant, modern energy, with a thriving food scene and some of the best nightlife in the region.
But Montenegro's beauty isn't just limited to its coastal towns. Inland, the country is home to some of the most stunning national parks and mountains in Europe. Durmitor National Park, with its towering peaks and crystal-clear lakes, is a hiker's dream come true. And the Tara River Canyon, with its turquoise waters and stunning scenery, is a must-visit for any nature lover.
As I explored this incredible country, I was struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Montenegrin people. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with a smile and a warm welcome, and that warmth stayed with me throughout my journey. Whether it was a friendly local showing me the ropes, or a delicious home-cooked meal shared with a new friend, I felt like I was part of the family.
One of the culinary highlights of my Montenegrin adventure was indulging in the country's signature lamb dishes. Slow-cooked to perfection in a traditional peka oven, the lamb was tender, juicy, and full of flavor. I savored every bite of the classic 'janjetina' - a whole lamb roasted on the spit, served with a side of crispy potatoes and fresh vegetables. The rich, gamey flavor of the lamb was balanced by the subtle aroma of herbs and spices, leaving me craving more of this hearty, comforting dish. Whether enjoyed in a cozy mountain tavern or a seaside restaurant, Montenegrin lamb is a must-try culinary experience that will leave you feeling like a true Balkan gourmet
