THE BENCH: Reminder to get out of your own way

So how often do you see a leader get so caught up in details they stop leading? This lesson is the same when I go in the morning to begin my workouts and the BENCH is sitting there, as a reminder that in the big picture this simple BENCH is really doing many things. BUT the real lesson is, I trust the BENCH.

Here is the key, if I am working on my chest, the BENCH is the anchor for my chest exercise. Yes there are specific exercises I need to do, the smaller details but if the BENCH was not there as the core, it would not matter.

The next day, I am working on arms, again I use this simple hard-work base, this core the BENCH for those exercises. So how does this relate to the fact that LEADERS loose sight of the big picture and suddenly get stuck in small details?

They lack either the BENCH, in the leadership they have put in place as your TEAM is the same as THE BENCH. If the BENCH, THE CORE is right they handle those details and they figure out the best way to make it work, NOT you as the leader. OR, and this is the one that will destroy companies and destroy teams. IF the leader does not trust the BENCH/TEAM, they constantly jump in and try to manage the details. They never allow the BENCH to just be that solid base to work from.

The end result of this is the TEAM feels defeated, the feel that trying to work at what they need to do is always second guessed, they feel they can not make any decisions without either someone else making it for them or they feel they work hard to get everything organized and suddenly the leader just pulls the BENCH out from under them. They stop trying, they stop working out they feel defeated and they fail.

THE BENCH is a reminder that you need a solid trusted foundation to build from, you trust it, you lean on it and you know if you allow it to be what it is, a strong solid foundation you can build off of it forever. 45 years later the BENCH is still the foundation, many new exercises, many new details but the foundation I have trusted for 45 years is there everyday. Let your leaders, your trusted team do their job!
