THE BENCH: IT IS NEVER A STRAIGHT LINE

Over 40 years of being an executive and as I have gone from various companies and various roles, one specific observation is, NO IT IS NOT A STRAIGHT LINE. Think about the bench, the assumption is, I go out and bench press 10 lbs 10 times and if I do this daily I will be benching 100 lbs in no time. Fair assumption, put in the work and you will see results.

Now let's have a reality check. You get sick and have to miss some days? You get hurt and you have to go backwards to get back on track so you reverse what you have worked so hard for. Your body just for whatever reason is not as responsive to the exercise as you want, everyone is unique and different so you get much slower results than you thought would occur.

What do you do? Give up? Decide it is not worth it? try something else to see if it works better? The answer is you work at it, perseverance is key, and discipline is key. The magic in all this is knowing the WHY. Why are you doing this to begin with? If you know that the goal is not how fast you get there, not that you are competing with anyone but rather, you set this as a goal to go from 10 lbs to 100 lbs for yourself. If that goal is yours and the why is so you personally feel better, you work at it, maybe it takes 30 days longer? Maybe it means you have to take more rest and recovery days to get there. Maybe you need to mix in some push-ups to stretch the muscles differently or add some dumbbell work?

The point is there is not ever just a straight line, the point is you have to know the WHY if you are to succeed. You have to have a mindset to keep pushing forward so as to not give up but know this is YOUR race, not anyone else.

When I get hired to be a CEO, I always ask the following, what is the product you are delivering? Most say the wrong thing so I find the why and the what first. I get to know people, who is doing what and why. after this is the why and the way we deliver the why correct? and after that take it all, product, process and people and let the magic begin.

How long does this take? Is it always just a straight line connecting the dots? NO
