THE BENCH: FEAR OF CHANGE
So why is it that we live our entire lives dealing with change, yet that very issue is what destroys many companies and often many careers? We go from grade school, to High school to sometimes college and work. Each phase means new challenges, new friends and perhaps even new place we live. CHANGE!
We get married perhaps, have children perhaps and later grandchildren, all means change in our relationships, in our handling of money and family matters all means change.
My years of working out on the BENCH and as we have shared, injury, recovery, aging, joint pains and more, all mean ADAPT! CHANGE! So now we come to a company, last time I checked the world, the economy, the wants and needs of the market all change over time. We are not still watching BLACK AND WHITE TV's are we ? I am laughing there is a group reading this saying, WHAT THE HELL IS A B&W TV! CHANGE. But now enter a company watch what happens when someone says we need to change this or fix this? Suddenly everyone is upset, fighting the change? WHY?

Take an executive and they just can not adapt they cannot change. I tell the story of starting my career and one of my very first executive roles was the Corporate Director of human resources, yes that was my role and my education was a degree in pharmacy not related at all. I had an assistant because that was how company's worked each exec had an assistant. The assistant came in sat and you talked to them instead of typing out memo's and they took dictation. Hand wrote everything you said, typed it up and that was the process. Fast forward to now ou dictated to a tape, they typed that up, to you moved to email now you typed your notes they edited them and finally as companies really looked to tighten expenses, you had to type your own memos, do your own trip planning and more. CHANGE, and those that did so kept working and moving ahaed others got left behind.
CHANGE IS HOW YOU GROW, if you choose to fight it, trust me you will be left behind and run over, choose to embrace change, learn from doing and thinking different and you will grow adapt and still be using that BENCH even 40 years later, maybe some different exercises, maybe been in a few different homes but you will still be working out. EMBRACE CHANGE, be smart live a long and productive career. There is an old saying, LEAD , FOLLOW of get out of the way. Standing still is not nor should it be an option. CHANGE.
To adapt the Heraclitus maxim to the Bench… ‘No man ever uses the same bench twice. For it’s not the same bench and he’s not the same man’
