Fetured Guest: Dr. john a. powell
We live in a very divided time. So many of us are feeding on fear, choosing to follow narratives--some very extreme--to inform how we see other people and view the world around us. The more we do that, the more we cast people in a negative light and the further away we get from compassion, empathy, and connection; from sitting down and having respectful, open dialogue to learn from one another.
So, the authors of an important book called Belonging without Othering have prescribed a new approach that encourages us to turn toward one another in some radical ways.
I had the honor of speaking with one of the authors, Dr. john powell , an internationally recognized expert in civil rights, structural racialization, housing, and democracy, and the Director of the Othering and Belonging Institute at University of California, Berkeley.
What is "othering"? This critical term is a phenomenon in which some individuals or groups are labeled as not fitting in or belonging within a dominant social group's norms. We see this today on a vast spectrum in workplaces, by one person or entire groups or organizations.
