Last Friday, participating in the opening event of #LiteratureBasel (the #LiteraturFestival) reminded me of the power that book ?????? reading has on our lives (or at least it has on mine).
Reading, learning, is about staying in the safe zone - no one can be a threat.
It feels even safer when writing - the power of generosity of sharing with others.
Feeling heard.
We all want to feel we belong.
The force of belonging is so powerful.
?
Authors experience challenges of reaching to a larger audience – to get that sensation that that their voice matters.
At nearly all times, authors are exposed and feel the vulnerability of sharing own thoughts, the insecurity of if, and doubts on how they would be accepted.
?
Every sign of #acceptance and #belonging into the aspirational tribe (of authors) matters. Like, that one personal reflection from a Friend: ?
Eduardo dos Santos Silva 's own and unique definition of #belonging. (Learning a new ABC)
Belonging is a contextual feeling, something I can experience right now in my life as part of a group but not as part of another; it means, when I feel it, that I am part of something bigger than myself, that yes I feel included but much more than that, that I feel useful, I feel that I am contributing and feel that it does make a positive difference that I exist in such a context. While it is something that I can trigger, I can initiate it, it will hardly survive if the environment is not welcoming to me, if I feel constantly pushed back (which is different from being challenged), and if I feel that I am ignored for reasons other than the quality of my contributions.

Belonging – feeling accepted - feeling welcome – feeling seen (validated as a human).

Writing this post, has reminded me the saying of Ellie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor:
“Opposite of love is not hate - it is indifference”.
The biologies of strong love and hate are similar.
?? By “hating” someone (I want to call it “challenging”), you still recognize their being. Negative emotions are the sign of discomfort, disagreement with their behaviors.
?? By ignoring, not seeing them – you disregard their existence.
?
??be-longing?
??longing to be
??longing to be seen ??

3 个月Belonging goes both ways: I want to feel I belong, and the company (or whatever) should try its best to let me feel that I belong. There are so many critical parts of this mutual wish of belonging, that I think it‘s best to work through ?The alphabet of belonging“! Knowing who you are (your real self) helps to determine where you want to belong. And as a company you also have an identity, and thus realize who‘s a good fit.
I read Aga's book a couple of months ago and highly enjoyed it. I loved her style, it is rich and entertaining, sometimes "twisted" in a positive way. It is an energizing, feel-good book. Especially of course for those interested in Belonging. Aga analyzes the existential need of Belonging in detail. The ABC part of her book provides alphabetically structured learning nuggets. As an intercultural trainer, I see Belonging in the same word and concept cluster as culture, loyalty, boundaries, identity, rules. As a practitioner of systemic and family constellations , Belonging is of utmost importance as it is often challenged when we need to balance between loyalty and growth. Belonging issues are existential issues, however we tend not to be aware of these. Aga's book addresses the various challenges related with Belonging .

3 个月At a time that people are feeling more disconnected, this book has been such a great comfort and reference to what it means to truly belong. You've managed to both challenge and expand the ways in which we talk about and understand belonging and using our own agency to access this experience for ourselves. Thank you for all the work you've done on such an important topic at a time when this is so needed.
