It is important to say something about thought to start with. a 'Thought' is part of the physical experience where conscious being selects and calls forth ideas in the Mind (There is only One Mind, the Mind of the Supreme Being). It is also the physical experience of mental perception of ideas, which have been called forth in the Mind by the related people and one or both of these experiences may lead to physical consequences or further physical experiences, owing to how the conscious being, when identifying as personal self, reacts. Health, disease, agreement, conflict and many other conditions may arise from such reaction.
The thoughts have got most of humanity convinced that the “thinker” of the thoughts is us. The truth is that most of our thoughts are random and occur automatically and without our conscious intention to think. Even when we do consciously make an effort to think of a solution to a problem it is possible to separate and observe the thinking process sounding and feeling like us thinking using our familiar inner silent reading voice to formulate thoughts.
What we observe is the brain, our personal computer, doing the thinking and we the observer are separate and aware of this computer doing the work. The brain is the “thinker” and we are the conscious observer. Thoughts appear to disappear but the ideas/ information in the Mind, from which they arise, never disappears. Once it is written, it is forever. However that information set can be amended. Thus there is karma and the extinction of karma.
As some say the thoughts are as dancers within the sun's light. No matter how the dancers move, you are still the sun shining, unaltered by the any movement within it. If you think you are the dancer, clouds as though cover the sun, clouds shaped like dancers. That is all you see. You think that is who you are. But if you were your thoughts, when one thought went away, wouldn't you also go away?
However, thoughts come and go but you stay and stay on. You stay to think about yesterday, you stay to think about the present moment. You stay to dream about tomorrow. You stay while a thousand thoughts come into and flow out of your mind.
Tasks would initially have been slow & of course conscious but through repetition, learned and consigned to the unconscious and becoming a new ability to be called on if or when needed. For a task such as, tying a shoelace. It would be much quicker to do it than to explain the processes you originally had to work through step by step. Yes we can change and progress though life as a result our thoughts.
But our reactions to those thoughts and where they came from will be very much guided by our unconscious. Our personality traits, emotional reactions, core beliefs will all come into play. Much of this would have been in development from very a young age beyond our memory scope.
Your thoughts define you correctly...i.e.if you think you’re smart, then you are smart. If you think you’re stupid, then you’re stupid. If you think you’re a good person, then you’re a good person. It’s a simple as that … but only subjectively personally. What we are or who we are isn’t defined that narrowly. We often change ourselves base on how other people see us. It affects how we think of ourselves. Then, we’d ask ourselves, “ Am I who I think of myself to be? “ Sometimes, we answer no only because the views that people have on us are different.
A thought is not the 'self' in any way. Thoughts are just like cars on a highway for you to jump in and explore the entire universe. Just like some cars on that highway will lead you to bad places and some will to correct destination. So, if a thought is capable to lead you to negativity then it is wise to assume that you are not your thoughts but rather just misguided since the passenger remains the unchanging entity in the system.
The nature of thought dominating one's mind prompt one to develop attitude suitable to the particular thought. Suitable attitude again develops similar thoughts. So this has compound impact in both the directions. It is also famous saying - Man is what he thinks. Stay blessed! #kishoreshintre
