Believe, Trust and Invest!

As we edge towards the end of the Women’s History Month (WHM), the belief each woman should have is that each day is “my day”. This thought will be paramount towards growth and rather than wait for a month in the next year, each one should continue to #Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress !

An apt theme for a progressive world we all envision! And yes, it all starts with one. The one individual who believes, who understands and who invests in progress: none other than one’s own self!

Several years ago, in the initial few years of my career, I had taken up a new role in a large organization, while juggling through life changing events of marriage and then childbirth. In the yester years of 3 months of maternity leave, I had to get back to work sooner than I would have wished it to be. As a woman, it was a responsibility galore and yes, I must accept that as a new mother it was confusing, exhausting, and challenging.

This is when a new opportunity arose at work – an internal job advertisement for a team manager. Although I had just over a year of experience in the organization and was back from maternity leave, I was determined to give it a try. Irrespective of many senior members in the team dissuading me with various reasons as to why I may not be suitable for the position, I was persistent to take my chance, because I was curious to explore my own abilities, the opportunities that may lay ahead if I just attended the interview and learn from the experience.

Guess what?! 3 months later, the announcement came in that I was promoted to lead the very same team I joined in!

A couplet from Thirukkural brings out the analogy of this excerpt from my life that I have narrated,

Kural: ?????? ???????????? ???????? ???????

???? ?????? ????.

Transliteration: aakkam adharvinaaich sellum asaivilaa

ookka mudaiyaa nuzhai

Translation: Good fortune seeks out a motivated person with determination and energy and comes as a friend to dwell with.

A firm believer of intrinsic motivation, my experiences through my life and career have always taught me that,

• If I do not believe in myself, nobody else may.
• If I do not invest in my own self, nobody else may.
• If I do not take the first step towards self-progress, nobody else may.

For everyone out there, be your own ally! Nobody knows you well as much as you do! You ought to be your own cheerleader! Be confident, be motivated and be that energy ball of enthusiasm! The sky is not the limit ??.
