Here’s a picture of part of my desk and my two Lego (other modelling bricks are available) botanical models. The Plum Blossom (on the right) I got for Xmas and the cherry Bonsai I’ve had for a couple of years. I was looking at them yesterday and it dawned on me that they had different metaphors to me which seemed worth sharing at this time of annual renewal, plus they make a change from resolutions!
- They remind me of my interest in Japanese tradition as both blossoms are significant in Japanese art and popular culture.
- They remind me of the brevity of things. Blossom doesn’t last long in nature so it’s important to enjoy it while you can. In fact, the cherry blossom was an emblem for the Samurai who saw in it a metaphor for life; “beautiful but short”. This in turn reminds me that all things, whether good or bad, must pass.
- They remind me to be grateful that I can actually make them! As a Parkinson’s cohabitator I know for sure that without the brain surgery I was lucky enough to have in 2021 these models would be a loose pile of bricks on the tabletop!
- They remind me, via the dust they accumulate, that life’s dust will always keep accumulating on you, whether it be routine, anxiety, fears, sadness, loss of confidence and other negative things and that sometimes we all need a little dusting off! ??
- They also remind me it’s fun to create something every now and then. ?
Finally, they remind me that I don’t have to philosophise about everything all the time; they’re only Lego! ????
