Calm and Peaceful Even When Life Isn't Perfect

Calm and Peaceful Even When Life Isn't Perfect

We get to choose to be our best self, even when life’s circumstances aren’t perfect.

Let me explain..

I was a high-functioning stressed and anxious person most of the time.

I thought that was just the way life was, and I was responding to it.

Life was stressful, challenging and exhausting, and so in turn I felt stressed, challenged, and exhausted most of the time.

It seemed as if I was just responding to life and my circumstances, most of which were completely out of my control.

And I had a vision in my mind for the day when everything would finally be working smoothly:

My job would be leave me feeling fulfilled without being too demanding.

My relationship with my husband would be perfect.

My house would look how I wanted it to.

My bank account would finally hit that magic number.

And my health and fitness would hit my target image.

?

To me, this list looked like goals that I was working towards.

Self improvement was a relentless project with good intentions to be my best self.

However over time, I started to notice that these ‘goals’ were unrealistic.

The goals were actually expectations for my life to be different.

And they kept me running on a hamster wheel, chasing a vision for my life where one day everything would be running perfectly so that I could finally relax and feel content and peaceful.

So that I could finally feel as if I “made it”.

But I started to realize that life was full of twists and turns. I had always planned to go from “A” to “B” in a straight line, but that simply wasn’t how life worked.

And as life unfolded, there was rarely a day when all of life’s circumstances were running perfectly smooth.

Ok let’s get real – there was never a day when everything was perfect!

As I started to notice the nature of life with its twists and turns, I started to wonder did that idealized chapter of my life actually exist?

Or was it a pre-conceived expectation of what I thought my life would look like?

And if my pre-conceived expectation of life was unrealistic due to the nature of life, that meant I would be inevitably disappointed with how life actually unfolded.

I would continue running towards my vision of perfection for my life but never actually get there.

I started to get curious –

What if I didn’t need to wait for life’s circumstances to be perfect so that I could be my best self, and instead, I could bring my best self to all of life’s circumstances?

I started to see that I could choose how I showed up, to any circumstance.

That life is only ever happening right now.

And we can choose to be our best self even when life isn’t perfect.

There are many circumstances in life which are out of our control.

But the one piece we can control is how we show up.

And we do this by learning how to live in the moment, being present to life as it is, and by accessing the space of calm, contentment, and peace that is always within, regardless of circumstances.

It’s the space of your True Self – which is always unchanging amidst a life of constant change.

And being able to glimpse it, by becoming more and more familiar with the feeling state of it, is the best gift I am here to share.

Thanks for joining me on this journey,

Tracey

Totally resonate with the "Once I hit metric X, things will be so easy." I would hit those benchmarks and then feel unfulfilled again. I knew I had to change what was really important to me.

Happiness is found within and not from what one poses. Cheers! In a similar note, leaders lead themselves first.
