Being Thankful Amidst COVID?

Being Thankful Amidst COVID?

Continuing the theme of C words re COVID…

Today is Thanksgiving in the United States. A Day for contemplation and celebration of things they are thankful for.

Whilst I am not  American, it’s a tradition I have adopted as I have some lovely American friends on both sides of the Pacific… and elsewhere in the world!

Who would have predicted, last Thanksgiving that there would be restrictions on how many people could meet, social distancing when shopping and masks being the norm?

Here in Australia we have had contact tracing being mandatory when going to restaurants when they first opened up. Our Church is still keeping records week by week as we have a number of elderly folks in the congregation.

Some would argue this is a breach of civil liberties and others see it as a means of infection control. It depends on how you look at the situation and your map of the world…

This time of year is one of community – when we are thankful for the people around us and remember those who have not made it through this year. A time for looking out for each other.

COVID has brought into sharp focus the need for community as many folks have lost their income and whilst there have been stimulus packages from Governments across the world those are not sustainable ad infinitum.

A spirit of co-operation has been seen where folks are looking out for the elderly and those in high risk categories, especially during lockdown. Would this have happened in our Auto Pilot busy-ness in quite the same way, I wonder?

So, on this Thanksgiving Day, if it is your tradition to observe it, I wish you a Happy Holiday, even if it not how you would usually celebrate it!
