Zoomers (Gen Z) guide to getting a job. | Part 2
Intro:
Most of my jobs have been offered to me without me looking for them. The common factor in obtaining those jobs was how I appeared. This is not to say that companies hire based upon style and appearance. However, most opportunities are presented by catching the eye of someone. While it is sometimes unfortunate, people often judge a book by it’s cover simply because they have no time to read it. Here are some of the things people should do to help attract those opportunities.
Dress appropriately.
Even if you are going to the grocery store you should look decent. At the very least when you go to the grocery store in pajamas people are going to assume you just rolled out of bed. Or they might assume you have no intention of doing anything when you get home.
When you are dressed decently you won’t bring negative attention to yourself. Your goal should be to draw the necessary attention to yourself, (at least while you are looking for a job). You can do this by being intentional about what you wear. It can be the slightest detail. Such as your shoes and belt matching. It can be the stitching of your shoes matching your belt stitching.
If you are looking to attract the attention of people in the financial industry, consider wearing a suit. A suite or at least a bowtie can attract the right people. Get yourself at least one nice suit. Something that pops and says you are conscious of your wardrobe.
Carry yourself well.
How you carry yourself is arguably more important than how you dress. You can have nice clothes but if you don’t carry yourself well it won’t look good either. This will happen naturally when you have good self-confidence. To gain self-confidence is something for another blog post. If you carry yourself well you will hold your head high. You will not slouch. When you walk, have a purpose so you walk with confidence and a destination.
Speak up.
Most of us often feel afraid to speak up. This can be due to our youth, or insecurities. Regardless we all have something worth speaking up for…ourselves. When you address someone new, speak with confidence and be sure to introduce your self clearly. Even when you are not looking for a job your current employer deserves to have a well-represented company.
Take care of your face.
This applies to men. If you are able to grow facial hair decide what to do with it. Either shave it and stay clean-shaven or sport a nice beard/mustache. Having ill-kept facial hair is not a sign of someone who is well put together. If you do something detailed with your facial hair it will attract people who are detailed oriented. This may lead to a position that suits you well.
All businesses are looking for leaders.
Regardless of the size of a business, they are looking for people to lead their organization. All of these things that help you to be a cut above the rest signal to hiring managers that you are indeed a leader.
You will attract like-minded people.
If you have no self-confidence, dress poorly, haven’t actively found your purpose in life…You will most likely end up with friends and bosses who are similar. This is just part of life and we all have the ability to choose who we are and what situations to put ourselves in. Use that ability to make your life what you want it to be, (What God wants it to be if you are Catholic)
