...is being single a disability?

The year 2016 has been a difficult one for most Nigerians.

The high cost of living and unstable rise and fall of the dollar to the Naira has taken a toll on Nigerian families.

The rates of weddings have reduced compared to last year due to most unmarried men postponing their weddings or holding off proposing to their significant other.

Having to think of yourself, work, accommodation, bills and then someone else can often times put a strain on love and relationships.

'out of relationship' mature single men and women are not fully productive in the workplace.

If the state of your heart affects your productivity, we can argue 'out of relationship' mature single men and women are not fully productive in the workplace.

As a highly religious and culture conscious nation, tradition has helped to shape our behavior, perception and reaction towards marriage as a whole.

Having discussions with ladies married and single on marriage and relationships, gives room for many experiences to be told.

ChiChi had this to say about hers "Before I got married, younger and older married ladies acted funny around me. It took a long time for me to realize that they thought I married late because I dressed flashy. I always heard side comments like 'that's why she is not married'.

'that's why she is not married.'

Tope says that ‘‘my friend who is in a long distance relationship is troubled all the time because she feels like she’s been trapped."

The culture has set a code for being unmarried. It’s reduced women to being 'disable' without title ‘Mrs’.

Technically, you are considered incomplete if you are still single.

The culture code for being single is 'incomplete'

Listening to ASK EVB on Inspiration FM 92.3 (@ifm923), Evangelist Bee pointed out that in his sessions with counseling singles:

'Most single ladies in their late 40s have been in long distance relationships lasting at least 5 years.'

He also pointed out that 'Social media is not the strongest antidote for loneliness. Face time and Skype shouldn’t be indefinite; there should be a plan in place to reunite with loved ones.'

The questions you're asking are all around but answers are not far fetched.

'Most single ladies in their late 40s have been in long distance relationships lasting at least 5 years.'

Indeed the state of the heart affects productivity. In my understanding, nobody is unproductive, you can only be in an 'unproductive state'. So the productive state is a state of happiness (when the heart is merry) and an unproductive state is a state of negative emotion (where the heart is overwhelmed & clogged). So it's when the state of being 'unmarried' begins to get overwhelming, that individual ultimately becomes unproductive.

Emeka Ebeniro interesting read from a cultural and traditional perspective. Whilst there are different pressures on women who are not married and working professionally. This women are probably the most beneficial to a company who requires staff to travel, liaise with external clients and potentially work later or more demanding hours to bring in results. Now I am not saying that all "single" women should become slaves of a company but they have a flexibility that some married women do not. This alone shows they can be more advantageous to a company. Just another angle

On a lighter note, going by the definition of the word disability and the expectations of the Society on Single men and women, I will like to agree being Single is a Disability. Lol....
