Not being seen at work?

I was the first to do it all in my family.?

First to go to college.

First to go to graduate school.

First to land a six-figure job in my 20s

And I had so much damn pride for being the first.?

That is until I realized it meant something else…

I was also the ONLY Latina in a white-dominated, highly competitive field.?

And that meant something more than being the first in my family.?

It didn’t come with pride. It came with conformity.?

It didn’t feel like I was supported for who I was but pushed aside because of my differences.?

I was seen all right. But I wasn’t seen for my value. I was seen for my color. My background. And what that meant to people who were not like me or from my community.?

And to truly be seen in the way I wanted, I knew one important thing…

I had to find the right work environment for me.?

I couldn’t establish the visibility I needed to acquire sponsors, brag about my work accomplishments, or assert my ideas in meetings until I was in an environment that allowed me to do so.?

I couldn’t raise my hand to do the extra work that would enhance my value because I felt my hard work was already being exploited.?

I couldn’t ask questions because I feared the judgment, stares, and sneers I would get that led to that internal voice and doubt saying, “They think you’re stupid.”

All of the pro tips I heard to increase my visibility and be seen were useless.?

Until I got into the space that I needed to be in to thrive.?

And that is what you must consider when saying, “I don’t feel seen at work” or “I want to be more visible.”?
