BEING SEEN as a Powerful Leader.

BEING SEEN as a Powerful Leader.

In this issue of Renaissance Men - Masculine Leadership for Today and Tomorrow, we illuminate...BEING SEEN as a Powerful Leader.

Every man's next leadership level requires him to explore and embrace parts of himself that he may have kept hidden and repressed because of a fear of something the Australians call Tall Poppy Syndrome. Sticking your head above the parapet, you become a target to be taken down.

The irony is that you need to stand out and show up to differentiate yourself from everyone else or risk getting overlooked, missing opportunities that make a difference, or being promoted to a new position.

To be seen - you must show up!

Understanding the nuanced difference between "being seen" and "showing up" can illuminate your path to more authentic leadership and deeper relationships. Though subtle, these concepts transform how you lead and connect.

Being Seen: The Power of Authenticity

"Being seen" is not just about visibility—it's about Vulnerability and authenticity. It means allowing others to witness your true self, complete with your strengths and imperfections. This level of openness requires immense courage and self-awareness.

Leadership Insight: An authentic leader who embraces being seen fosters trust and respect. As Brené Brown eloquently puts it in Daring Greatly, "Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage."

Truth and courage aren't always comfortable, but they're never weakness." When leaders reveal their true selves, they inspire their teams to do the same, creating a culture rich in honesty and mutual respect.

Take a moment to remember someone who you deeply respect as a leader. Write down their qualities. Reflect on where you can develop those qualities in yourself.

The pressure to know all the answers can be overwhelming for many male leaders. Admitting uncertainty or asking for help is often felt by men as a weakness - the feeling that you're perceived as weak is a man's kryptonite. There is nothing more humiliating for a man to be in the risky position of feeling judged for being caught, metaphorically, with his pants down" or being "found wanting."

However, this willingness to admit that you "don't know" paves the way for genuine growth and innovation. Embracing Vulnerability, acknowledging limitations, and seeking input from others can significantly enhance your leadership effectiveness.

Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, has a leadership style that is marked by empathy and transparency. By openly sharing his experiences and challenges, he has reshaped Microsoft's culture, making it more inclusive and innovative. His authenticity has empowered employees to bring their full selves to work, fostering a dynamic and engaged workforce.

Personal Insight: In your personal relationships, being seen means sharing your inner world with your loved ones. This kind of emotional openness deepens connections and builds unshakeable bonds.

Showing Up: The Art of Presence and Commitment

"Showing up" is about consistency and reliability. It's the act of being fully present and engaged in both your professional and personal lives. This dedication and presence reflect your true values and intentions, allowing others to see you and be led by you. No one wants to follow, and they don't trust. Your transparency, openness and clarity of vision sets you apart as a leader.

Leadership Insight: A leader who consistently shows up provides stability and direction. In his book Leaders Eat Last, Simon Sinek highlights, "The true value of a leader is not measured by the work they do. A true leader is measured by the work they inspire others to do." Consistency in leadership builds a foundation of trust and reliability, which is essential for a thriving team.

Angela Ahrendts, former Senior Vice President of Apple Retail, was known for her hands-on approach and commitment to her team. Her constant presence and engagement were instrumental in revolutionising Apple's retail experience, turning it into a powerhouse of customer service and innovation. Notably, her openness in her interactions with employees and her breathtaking humility are traits that make her an inspiring leader.

Personal Insight: In your personal relationships, showing up means being there—physically, emotionally, and mentally. Being present, giving your undivided attention, listening and letting those you care about know that you have their back - It's about being a steady source of support and love, proving our commitment through your actions.

The Synergy of Both: Crafting a Harmonious Life

Integrating "being seen" and "showing up" is crucial for a balanced and fulfilling life. Authentic visibility and consistent presence create a powerful synergy that enhances your leadership and personal relationships.

Stepping into the spotlight and taking a stand for yourself is essential. It takes courage! It's not enough to merely exist in the background; authentic leadership requires active participation. By showing up consistently and authentically, you allow yourself to be truly seen.

Actionable Steps:

  1. Cultivate Self-Awareness: Engage a coach to help you engage in self-reflection and understand your authentic self.
  2. Ask yourself: What situations are you comfortable allowing yourself to be seen by others? What are you hiding? Where are your actions inconsistent with your values?
  3. Seek and Embrace Feedback: Encourage honest feedback from your team and loved ones. Understanding how others perceive you can highlight areas for growth in both authenticity and consistency.
  4. Practice Vulnerability: Start by sharing personal stories and experiences. Expand this practice to your team and larger groups, fostering a culture of openness.
  5. Demonstrate Reliability: Ensure your actions align with your words. Be someone who others can depend on. If it's a NO, let it be a firm no; if it's a YES, be your word and follow through with congruent actions. Show up consistently for your team and loved ones, reinforcing your commitment.

Embracing the balance of being seen and showing up enriches your leadership and personal lives. It's a journey of continual growth and deeper connections, where authenticity and reliability are the cornerstones of success.

  • "The true price of leadership is the willingness to place the needs of others above your own."??Simon Sinek.
