Story time (perhaps simplified, who knows): Microsoft Office for a long time refused to support OpenDocument formats, because, you know, doing so might help those pesky open source office alternativ– ahem, I meant to say: It's a lot of work to implement and maintain it. Along came the German government that decreed that government agencies must be able to read all well-established document formats in case they receive them by email – and if Microsoft Office was not willing to support this, well, then they'd switch to OpenOffice instead, which does. Lo and behold, it didn't take long and Microsoft actually *was* able to implement a converter.

I think you'll find that nothing exists in a vacuum except modern right-wing populist thinking, _and_ habitats in space.
