Being Resilient in Your Business

Being Resilient in Your Business

We are told that businesses need to be resilient.

Certainly many of my clients have this ringing in their ears from the media, well-intentioned family members, peers.... OK it isn't always the exact words of “hey, be resilient”, but phrases over the last few months like businesses need to pivot, you have to be a leader, make sure people can carry on working from home, or back in the office, or meet the customer needs differently from herein.

It's all about overcoming challenges, being resilient.

Sure, we can understand how resilience is a useful trait to have when running a business but how do we draw upon this resource? Especially when the landscape keeps throwing up surprise after surprise?

Because, it’s in that moment that there’s the need to do something.

To act with resilience.

OK, but how do you do that?

Well, just take action. To over simplify matters.

OK a calendar, a sense of purposeful direction and the tools to deliver will make help break down the enormity of any challenge into actionable tasks.

And any well-imposed timetable of tasks for you or your employees can perhaps get some output.

And those outputs, rightly or wrongly directed, lead to pushing through any challenge.

Concerned it might be the wrong direction you could be taking to resolve issues?

Yes, it’s a great idea to just check in with your plan and actions against that plan.

Track your time for a week or two in half or one hour blocks.

At the end of the week or fortnight, review what you spent time on by totalling the number of hours each task completed on and then look at your priorities against the plan.

That helps keep you redirecting into the grand plan.

Two other things happen when people do this exercise: the output magically goes up and time taken to do things goes down.

And when the hours required to complete tasks are fewer in number, there's suddenly time to think and be more creative.

Space seems to open up in front of you.

And before you're thinking about which employees to approach first to do this type of exercise, you should know that this exercise works best for business owners - which is where I'd recommend starting – you!

Want some structure towards freeing up time to think and get creative? Drop me a message and I'll fire back a plan that typically frees up 3-6 hours a week to guide you through it all.

An ancient Japanese poet once said, ‘My barn having burned down, I can now see the moon’. There's always an upside to things and being resilient helps us overcome and move up quicker.

This is an exercise that I did recently that was so informative. I ended up realizing how much time I was donating for free and I've cut back dramatically.

Sometimes, we even need a longer time out, especially when it's a time to truly pivot or possibly even walk away and start a new chapter.
