Being "quietly competent" can be a trap
(but there is a solution!)

Being "quietly competent" can be a trap (but there is a solution!)

"Louise, how can being good at your job be a trap?"

Here's why...

When you're good at your job, but you don't spend any time or energy on articulating your IMPACT and your ACHIEVEMENTS, then it's just too easy for senior leaders to:

  • Overlook you and your contribution (and this is easier to do in Comms, where too many people don't understand what we do!)
  • Look past you to other, more confident professionals for the leadership track (who may not be as good at their job as you!)
  • Keep you in your role, where they know you can deliver and where it's easier for you to be forgotten...

Hmm, doesn't sound good does it?

I often tell my coaching clients that the magic equation for career success (and leadership development) is this:

COMPETENCE + CONFIDENCE = CREDIBILITY

You need both sides of this sum, in order to amount to more than the sum of your parts! This is particularly true when organisations are looking to promote from within or place people on the leadership track.

Is this sounding all too familiar?

If so, I'd love to help.
