Shipping something at the cryogenic temperatures of approx. -190C    -  the temperature of the moon surface-  was always something spectacular to me. Not only because of stunning visual effects  - liquid nitrogen (which is used as a coolant ) in contact with ambient air boils like a water on the stove and evaporates.

It is literally the temperature out of this world. The lowest temp ever recorded on earth was -89,2 C - slightly lower than the temperature of dry ice - it burns when you touch it.

A decade ago I have learnt about the concept of shipping the samples in the “fumes of liquid nitrogen”– namely why the dry shipper is called dry and what are the benefits over regular dewar with liquid nitrogen. Dry shippers have evolved over these years and are getting better especially in terms of handling– those we currently use are much lighter, can be charged much faster and some can be monitored online thanks to e.g  temperature, light, humidity, shock, tilt GSM/GPS trackers. Some of these dry shippers can maintain the temperature up to 14 days, without replenishing. Compared to other temp- controlled packing solutions in other temperature ranges, it is more than a good result.

It seems to me already technologically advanced. Could it be done better?

What would you say about the cryogenic shipper you don’t have to fill with liquid nitrogen or any other gas or liquid?

Here comes Via Capsule :  thermal packaging built based on the state of art stirling engine which cools it down to the desired temperature and the passive insulation which maintains the proper temperature long enough to deliver the product at the right temperature.
