Rejecting introductions for no good reason is a sign of a fixed mind.
Have you ever met someone who refuses to be introduced to you?
Even after someone close to them suggests it would be a good idea to talk to you, they still say no. They don’t see the need to be introduced to you because they think you have no value to offer them. They let their goals blind them from a conversation.
I meet people like this all the time.
They don’t want to talk to a new person. They think of introductions as being transactional. “I give you this and you give me that.”
This way of thinking is destructive.
An introduction means that someone you know has taken the time to validate the person’s request of your time. That person you know and perhaps respect has put their neck out for you. The least you can do is entertain the idea.
The introductions you say no to hide amazing opportunities.
Your time is precious.
You’re busy doing big things, we get it.
You’ve achieved a lot in your career, congrats.
Rejecting introduction after introduction for no good reason is a sign of a fixed mind. It’s the lie that you know all the right people already, or that you’re way too important to talk to strangers.
Some of the biggest opportunities in my life came from completely random introductions. I wouldn’t be writing or running a small business if it weren’t for introductions. People introduced me to what I have now.
Introductions give you a chance to be helpful. Why would you want to be helpful? Because it gives your life meaning and helps you take home a little bit of fulfillment. If all you do is help yourself and sit in your own box being the smartest person in the room looking to only work with A+ talent, you’ll miss the chance to create a legacy.
You’ll be remembered for how you helped people at your funeral. Blocking introductions and focusing on your selfish little goals will cause regret looking back from the retirement village patio party.
Greed is often associated with money. But people can be greedy with their time too and hoard it all for themselves.
Be generous once in a while and say yes to an introduction without requiring a 30-slide PowerPoint deck full of justifications to stroke your ego.
How to Be Open to More Introductions — and Change Your Life
- Pull the pole out of your ass that makes you think you’re special.
- If the intro comes from someone you know really well, consider it.
- Set time aside each month to meet 2–3 new people and expand your network beyond the people who tell you how awesome you are.
- Open your mind to other cultures, beliefs, and ideas beyond your own.
The opportunities that change your life come from real people. Be open to introductions and you’ll meet awesome people you’d never of found otherwise who can change your life.
An open mind is a mind that thrives beyond one’s existence.

4 年Tim Denning, I understand that people are busy, but I'm always surprised when even a direct referral is rejected. I can top that... How about a direct referral from within their company AND from a Senior leader no less?!?!? It's the sign of a closed mind... We do it in-house, we already do it this way, WHY CHANGE? It's often fear.
