Being more efficient
We can look at this from a personal, business or even technology point of view, I believe this can resonate in many different areas.
I have been attempting to read a lot more recently and I am currently reading a book by Simon Sinek and it is his book called “Start with why” but starting to read something means I have to be more efficient in other areas of personal and business life. Potentially sacrificing something to make way for my few pages or minutes or reading each day.
Which brings me onto the reason for writing something about efficiency, everything we do in all personas is to try and be more efficient, the time it takes to get to work, the cost of that new car you are looking at and many other areas of efficiency.
If we were looking at the technology world and in particular the Availability of data world, some of those efficiencies might be around time and how long our backups are taking to complete, how much time does it take to recover the data in the event of an outage or how much cost can the business afford to lose from a financial or data loss stand point?
It’s not just about Money!
Money is obviously massively important in all areas of life. It’s the driving factor behind many of us, however being efficient doesn’t just mean making something as cheap as possible and gaining the best return on investment. My point here is that it’s not just about the money, you can spend the most amount of money on something yet may still not get the best quality product or save any time from doing so.
I would expect the higher up in the business the more and more focus on money as being efficient.
It’s also about the Time and how Time can be used more efficiently
For some of us it’s the time aspect that we see as more of the defining factor of efficiencies, but you cannot buy time we are stuck with according to research that we have about 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4 seconds this is what is known as a “sidereal” day and there are 366.242 2 stellar days in one mean tropical year (one stellar day more than the number of solar days).
It’s the administrators in the business side of things that we see efficiencies being more focused around time and how long things take, or how much time can be saved if we do this, that or the other.
Quality of Service, Quality of Product, Quality, Quality, Quality
Regardless of what you are spending time and money on the expectation is that the quality is at the best level.
The quality being the best though is not going to be the case. Let’s look at software versions, if we use the free edition you are going to get the fundamental features and functionality to make sure you can achieve what the product or software sets out to achieve. Then you move up the editions and you unlock further features and functionality.
The quality of the initial asks, or process is probably the same throughout the edition range. However, the bolt on features are where the quality can be increased if the outcome is the requirement from you, the business or the customer.
What I am getting at is that quality can be measured in so many different ways and it is different for different scenarios but when looking at being efficient the quality has to be looked at as an element of that.
Just because something saves you money and time, but the quality is so poor then that might not fit. Or if the quality absolutely fits the requirements and its cheap, then that’s what we call a deal!
