Being a Living Lab is an opportunity and a source of pride

The Clinique Provence-Bourbonne is a rehabilitation clinic east of Marseille. In both in- and out-patient settings, the clinic rehabilitates patients after many different conditions, such as trauma, stroke, or surgery. They see no problem in bringing the amputee group skiing in the Alps and are driven by a constant passion for improvement. Lo?c Bancilhon is the manager of the facility, and he loves projects!

“Becoming a Living Lab highlights the job we are already doing and is a way to concretize our mode of experimentation and our passion for finding new methods”, he starts and explains. “Rehabilitation is an exciting playground to experiment on new ways of care quickly and efficiently. For example, we can test different rehab training bikes to see if the rehab outcome is improved on a bike where you can experience seven experience films from different environments, versus a standard training bike showing the distance and speed.

Lo?c says that it does not necessarily need grand investments to be innovative. There are many ways to improve for the patients with smaller costs. It is often a good model to test, evaluate, and try again. “We need to be more plastic on how we perform projects”, he says and continues: “As a Living Lab, I think we can test and scale methods in a faster way.”

On their radar for the work as a Living Lab is the concept of “augmented rehab”. The outcome of rehab is highly dependent on the patient’s commitment, and the clinic will be looking into ways to cherish the spark in the patients when it comes to rehab activity. This can be done by providing both human support and tech solutions that support. The digital part of the patient pathway is something that they would especially like to explore and take some steps further.

They also see their status as a Living Lab as a way of strengthening the employer brand, and a way to recruit staff. To work in a different way is something that seems to attract skilled professionals. “Being a Living Lab is an opportunity and a source of pride”, Lo?c concludes.?
